Sarah Palin. Wonder Woman or Savonarola in a Skirt
67
Just who and what is Sarah Palin anyway? She burst onto the scene at the Republican National Convention as John McCain's running mate like Wonder Woman breaking up a crime ring in Gotham--all American flag and flashing magic bracelets to repel evil. Her speech was flawless. In spite of an unfortunate nasal twang, she knows how to romance a camera and punch home her talking points. On top of that she's beautiful, has five kids, a handsome husband, and can govern Alaska and nail a moose with a shotgun at the same time. It was a very impressive debut. She was so good that nobody is even talking about John McCain anymore. All eyes are on her. She's like the beautiful nurse hired to push the invalid industrialist CEO around in his wheel chair at the annual Board Meeting and who gets more attention than her powerful employer. We've had the "lipstick on a pig" bru-ha-ha, the "bridge to nowhere" contraversey and the " Iraq is God's work" comment. The blogesphere is abuzz
But who is the real Sarah Palin? Inquiring minds want to know and leave it to the National Enquirer to tell them. A rather vicious whisper campaign has started that accuses Palin of everything from not being the mother of her last child, to an extra-marital affair with her husband's business partner. I'm not very impressed by this sort of thing and tend to discount it. I also firmly believe that a candidate's personal life is not necessarily a reflection of his/her ability to govern. Bill Clinton was an effective President in spite of his weakness for bimbos. Calvin Coolidge was not, in spite of his moral rectitude. I don’t care if Palin’s daughter is a total trollop or her son is a drug addict and I don’t care who she is or is not “doing it” with. I wish the media would butt out of that sort of speculation. It’s gross and probably not true anyway.

Here's What Worries Me
I care about what will happen if she gets elected Vice President and is, as they say, a heartbeat away from the Presidency, and the President drops dead or is incapacitated……not a far-fetched notion at all when you consider that John McCain is 72 and has had four melanomas. His chances of surviving four years in the stress filled pressure cooker of the White House are less than average. I’d like to make sure he’s got an understudy who knows her lines and can make sure that the show will go on.
An email surfaced on the internet last week from someone named Anne Kilkenny who is a resident of Wasilla. She’s a real person who really knows Sarah Palin and the email, which she wrote to friends, but which went viral on the internet, shines a real light on a real woman and that light is not entirely flattering. What jumped out at me was this:
She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.
Here’s a link to the entire email . Read it for yourself. Americanlelection2008
Then I read another story that jerked my chain—the one that inspired my comparison of Sarah Palin to Savonarola in the title of this hub. For those who don’t know, Girolamo Savonarola was a 15th century monk with some rather puritanical ideas that did not go down well with the Medici Popes. He was just not into the European Renaissance and wanted to return to an earlier, holier time. Among other things he exhorted true believers to burn mirrors, opulent clothing, “lewd” books and pictures, and other luxurious items in huge “ bonfires of the vanities.” It was this that lept to mind when I read about Sarah Palin and the local library in Wasilla. It seems that in 1996, Palin, as mayor was interested in having certain books removed from the library shelves—books that conflicted with her vision of morality, you know , like Harry Potter books, because they glorify witchcraft. So sure was she of the rightness of her cause that she tried to have the librarian fired, but was stopped by a local citizen group. That gave me pause. This is clearly a woman who thinks in absolutes and who has no qualms about imposing her absolutes on others. That sort of thinking can be dangerous for those who do not share it—and sometimes for those who do. Savonarola ended up being excommunicated and executed in 1497. You can’t hold back ideas forever, no matter how hard you try. They have a life of their own.
I’m trying to imagine Sarah Pailin in Washington. Does the story read, as Matt Damon so eloquently put it in a recently released video, “like the script of a bad Disney movie”?( check out that video below) Sarah Goes to Washington. Can't you just see it now on the Lifetime Channel? A perky American small town girl next door unexpectedly gets elevated to President of the United States. She manages to charm Nicolas Sarkozy, but is stopped cold by Vladimir Putin-- even though, as Cindy McCain thoughtfully pointed out, when asked about Palin's international experience, her state is sandwiched between Russia and Canada. It might work out fine in the movies, but I don't think the real life scenario is worth taking a chance on.
Let's face it. She's a hick-- and perhaps a dangerous one at that. If Sarah Palin lived down the street from me, I'd probably like having her as a neighbor. I bet she keeps her house neat and her lawn mowed and never gives loud parties. I might even invite her for coffee now and then--but as Vice President? She still has to prove herself as far as I'm concerned. I'm looking forward to her debate with Joe Biden and to her first press conference. Maybe then I'll have some real information to chew on instead of spin, gossip and hoopla.
In the meantime, I’m trying to remember that things are rarely as simple as they seem and the media both on the left and right like to spin and distort for the sake of the almighty dollar. Who is Sarah Palin? The truth is slowly emerging, but assessing all the information and disinformation is going to take a little time. I hope that we have enough.
On the other hand, her story, however it turns out in November, just might make a great chick-flick. Are you listening Disney?

Bush was at the olympics saying that our economy is in good shape, the war on terror is going well. So we have survived with some one that is clueless running our country for eight years.
America needs strong leadership and the only choice for that is Obama, as a Republican that kills me to say, but without guidance out of the cesspool that Bush has flushed us into we are doomed, not that China and India would dislike that.
Agree or not on the war, we have no more money to fight it, all our generals, Condie Rice, leaders in Iraq want us out, only McCain wants us to stay. Everyone agrees we need to be energy independent, but McCain has voted against every bill for alt energy.
Now his running mate has destroyed the lives of people she hates, police chief, highway patrol chief, ex-brother in law and the librarian. Reminds me of the CIA agent outed by Bush for having a husband that told the truth about Iraq before the war.
This pig is going to take gallons of lipstick.
@ stevenschenck and all of Robie2's fans, you just have to listen to this experiment, from NPR, about putting lipstick on a pig ...
Wow, I loved that 'Putting Lipstick on a Pig'! I didn't know, that this phrase was so common in American politics. I personally really like the look of Sarah Palin! She is a beauty, absolutely no doubt about that!More I watch adds about her, better she looks!
However, the words of actor Matt Damon in this video are very scary and real: Sarah with all her experiences is truly not capable to run huge United States and especially to deal with tricks of top world leaders of the 'dark side', such as Vladimir Putin, China's Communist Party, Iran, Pakistan, to name but a few.
p.s. But, she looks amazing!
Stevenschenck, Great comment, you had me at lipstick :)
Hi All
Sally's Trove--I'm hoping for chick-flick outcome too. I'm an Obama mama who hopes Palin will end up back in Alaska where she belongs. I know she didn't ban the books--but I think she would have if she could have gotten away with it. Thanks too for the NPR link I'm ROTFL with the farmer putting lipstick on his pig.
stevenschenck -- I agree with you totally, but would add that we need strong leadership with new vision....and Obama has that. I've been impressed by the way he has handled the Palin phenomenon..... he has hit back strongly but stuck to the issues and left the family stuff and gossip alone. Says a lot for him, I think. That's what I call the kind of change we need.
Solarshingles -- I don't think she's up to handling Czar Putin and Co. either and I hope the occasion never arises--but she is pretty, isn't she?:-) I love the Matt Damon video too, but take a look at the one from her church where she says the war in Iraq is doing "God's work" It's a little scary
Rose Ella-- thanks for stopping by and commenting :-)
The lipstick thing is a total smear (just imagine here a toddler trying out her mom's red rouge lipstick). I am totally disgusted by the campaign based on that innocent comment. Who really believes that Obama was talking about Palin??? Now, with respect to the hocky mom herself, I don't know. She can talk the talk, but maybe not walk the walk. Obviously, McCain's age and health issues raise the Presidency as a real possibility - which Damon makes clear in his video. Disney? I'm not sure... seems like many of our politicians on both sides tell "scary stories" with "happy endings." Can voters sort it all out by November? A true gamble.
I just don't like the idea of Sarah! Just a chess move we all know that! Yep...I am all for girl power. Just not that kind of girl power! I am not against folksy, just who knows!
Hi Steph--I don't believe you called the lipstick thing a total smear ROTFL soooooo funny--but the nonsense of distracting voters with such nonsense is not funny at all. I think these are the same old Karl Rove tactics at work here--magic tricks to keep us all off balance and away from the truth. I notice McCain is not talking so much about Obama's lack of experience these days and I agree with you he had a real nerve screaming sexism over the lipstick remark.
Oh well, pay no attention to the man behind the curtin:-)
Patkagmat-- I don't think I like the idea of Sarah either, but I'll still give her a hearing--that is if she ever says anything other than "thanks but no thanks on the bridge to nowhere" and yes, it was a brilliant strategic move on the part of McCain to choose her--but it was a risk too and it may backfire on him. Wait and see.
Thanks for this great, informative and entertaining hub! Sarah Palin isn't my cup of tea politics-wise, and I'm very cynical about what her role is in all this. I can't help feeling she's mainly there to add some glamour and oestrogen to the Republican camp, to try to widen the voter-demography and pilfer any floating democrats who may be swayed by this small glimmer of diversity.
Personally, (and I know this is unfair), she reminds me too much of Britney Spears's mum, (visually, and politically I guess), for me to be able to take her serioiusly as a politician!
I suspect she'll fall in a heap when she has to debate real issues without autocue, but time will tell. Now, maybe I've lived too long in the Middle East, surrounded by Filipinas, Chinese, Mongolians, Indonesians, Lebanese, Ethiopians, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, East Europeans and even the occasional jeune francaise, but - Sarah Palin, good looking? Spare me!
Robie, this is the most balanced and well-considered hub on Sarah that I've read so far. I'm so impressed. Seriously, I could not have written this, I have no restraint. I'm so angry right now about all of it that I can barely see straight, and I am so grateful for your thoughtfulness and skill here. The day after McCain chose her I dashed off a hub on "The 2008 Limited Edition Commemorative Republican Barbie Collection" offered by the Danbury Mint (there is no such collection, I just made it up to be a bitch), then after three days I thought the better of it and just deleted it.
I really liked the Matt Damon clip. He says more calmly than I am capable of saying what I think about her, and I also appreciate that, that he can do that. I know that in the world of internet masks I tend to pick up the Cassandra mask again and again, but seriously, this could be really scary-bad. Let's hope the country is better than what I suspect it is.
Robie,
I love the movie idea. My question is, though, who would get the lead? Do you have any ideas. My first thought was Roseanne Barr, soley because she looks like she could handle a gun, but in the end I went with Oprah. Not for any particular reason other than if Oprah played the part, it would get me to my first chick flick ever.
Thanks for the hub, I enjoyed it.
sschilke
Great hub Robie. Very calm and considered. I've been reading stacks of stuff on this lady since she hit the scene, and she certainly seems to have stirred up a hornets nest. Over and over I keep reading that Alaska's geograpphy gives her an advantage in international relations. What a laugh. I live on the south coast of the UK, so I'm probably about as far away from France as I am from London (about 60 miles) Most people I know speak little or no French and would be pushed to name the Fench President, let alone know what party he represents or any of his ministers!
Hello everybody:-) and thanks for all the wonderfull comments.
Moon Daisy--I don't quite know what to think of Sarah Palin. Her appearances are all so scripted. I feel rather cynical about her too. In any case, I am voting for the top of the ticket really, and my choice is Obama-- you are right that she was chosen because she is young and fairly unknown and will appeal to the conservative base--which John McCain does not. We'll see what happens:-)
Paraglider--always nice to see you. I think she is too tough and smart and well coached to fall in a heap--but I do think that she is likely to blunder eventually in some way-- as for her looks-- to me she looks like a cheerleader but the guys tell me she's "hot". I guess she's better looking than her running mate anyway:-)
pgrundy-- I made a concerted effort not to rant on this one. I think I'm getting tired of all the spin and emotional hyperbole from both sides in this campaign and I wanted to try a more measured approach-- I wish the candidates would do the same LOL If Sarah Palin talks about that damned bridge to nowhere one more time I'm going to puke! I loved the Matt Damon clip too and I agree with you that we are in deep doo doo here in America both politically and economically. Don't stop, Cassandra, please don't. We need your voice too:-)
So.... did you all see the interview of Palin last night by ABC? I was less than impressed. Palin seemed baffled by questions on foreign policy. She is definitely a smart lady, but apparently has not done all of her homework. There is no "cramming" for the final exam when its time to make the tough decisions - God forbid - should she have to step into the #1 position.
I just caught that interview now, Steph. She really did seem completely clueless. You think they would have a team prepping her on what to say. She won't be able to get through the debate with Biden!
Great hub Robie. You really had me laughing in the opening. :) Everyone is going on about how beautiful Palin is but...can we talk about Matt Damon now? Isn't he just dreamy?
I agree... Matt Damon is hot! ;)
sschilke-- I see her as the heroine of a chick flick too--after all so much of what she says is already like a movie script and fiction too LOL
Amanda-- thanks so much for your comment. Isn't that wild about her having foreign policy expertise because of Alaska's location between Canada and Russia? Boggles the mind. I wonder if she acquires her expertise by osmosis LOL
Hi Steph,Amy,and Melissa
I've only caught snippets of the ABC interview--Charlie Gibson, isn't it? I bet they did coach her and she fell short even with coaching.....maybe that's why they'vve been keeping her away from the press. Perhaps Paraglider is right and she will fall apart. She will certainly fall out of the spotlight at some point
And Amy and Melissa--Matt is so cool--he should have a role in the Sarah Palin movie dontcha think?
I agree. :) And on a more serious note, I thoroughly enjoyed your post. I wrote a post about Palin yesterday, but I lack your self restraint in terms of leaving personal matters off limits... there are just too many things that don't add up about her last pregnancy! And I agree that personal matters (such as in the case of Bill Clinton) often say little about how well a person can perform in office, but either way you look at that pregnancy, she's either willing to tell a lie of monstrous proportions, or she was willing to put her unborn child in harm's way for the sake of political advancement. Either way... she's a force to be reckoned with. And I can just imagine her character in a Disney flick... Cruella De Vil with a little Evil Queen from Snow White thrown in (to capture her good looks and authoritarian ways).
OH! I like the Cruella DeVil imagery from Melissa G. above. This is such a frightening situation...including the past 8 years...anybody reading Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire ....? If not, don't worry...our country is currently a living example of Gibbons 8 volume tome...depressing.
Melissa G, I loved your correlation with Sarah Palin and Cruella DeVill! She really is a plain beauty, but also far too arrogant in the office and professional life, and she certainly does not respect opinion of other people, enough (we are talking about a politician and not about a cruel hunter, here) But, I am taking that more like a very good joke:)
There is one much more scary reality, described by Desert Blondie: Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. USA is a declining Roman Empire in a very bad financial and moral state (leadership), and that fact is very scary for the country and for the rest of the world, as well. America has proclaimed the freedom of speech and many more freedoms and prosperity to the entire planet! American dream! Being a substantial part in the winning against fascism and communism! And much, much more... However, last 8 years of 'Bush-Cheney's wicked lies' have been far too much! They suspended some of the most important freedoms of their own American people and have managed to transform America into an Orwell like police state full of fear...That is not a way of how to rule the Big America! They have bankrupted the country...they haven't done anything to get rid of a total dependency to foreign oil, because they are leaders of Oil Lobby - owners of oil corporations...They sacrificed thousands of young American lives in Iraq only because of oil and oil rights for their oil corporations...they have spent $trillions for weapons and war and not for the US education, health system, American energy independence, and that is plain sick. We are talking about the 'lost and massively abused Republican party' and its leaders.
Sarah Plain and John McCain belong to that very same group of people, who completely lost their touch with reality. Do you really want another 8 years of blatant Presidential lies, financial decline and cutting your basic freedoms of speech, etc. ???
Well said Solarshingles. We're in the Uk looking on helplessly. It's like watching a drama unfold from a distance. We just want the good guys to come charging in and boot the bad guys out. It's painful to watch, and it must be even more painful to be a part of it. And what's worse for us, is that we know that whatever happens to you guys is only a whisper away from what may happen to us.
Melissa g, -- I just went and read your hub on Palin--it's terrific. You make a very good case and you document it--which is the important part and yes I agree, that lies of this sort do tell a lot about a person's character. For anyone else who wants to read it-- here's the link:
http://hubpages.com/_hp1/hub/Sarah-Palins-Moral-Co
Desert Blondie--I agree the whole situation is very scary-- we live in frightening times, truly.
Solarshingles-- thanks for your insight. Don't get me started on the Bush Administration. They have indeed bankrupted us financially and I only hope that we are not bankrupt morally as well. It will take a lot of work to get oursellves out of this mess--and a lot of courage too. And Iagree with you totally that it is all about oil. Rome wasn't built in a day--but it didn't fall in a day either. We are not having a big crash llike the Soviet Union. Ours is a long slow slide downhill. I hope we can stop it before it is too late.
Amanda-- Thanks for the UK perspective. The sheer incompetence, ignorance and greed of the past eight years has been horrifying to watch here at home, but must be even more horrifying to watch from abroad. We are all so interlinked these days and it is true that " we will all go together when we go"
What a terrific hub. The scariest thing for me about Palin is not her lack of experience or her daughter's pregnancy. It's that she's a rigidly dogmatic, overly-assured thinker and she has absolutely no hesitation about lying.
The "attacking Iraq was a task from God" was very, very scary. Her handlers have told her to explain that away, but this is how she thinks. And the whole Bridge to Nowhere lie, and her "I'm a fiscal conservative" lie get repeated like the gospel by the McCain camp, but they're not even close to the truth.
But the McCain camp has been ramping up the lies without hesitation lately. Paul Krugman's latest column was great: he said that Bush's lies were sophisticated. You needed a good understanding of economics and a calculator to know he was lying. McCain's lies are easily verifiable to anyone with a connection to the Internet, but they get repeated ad nauseam.
I don't know what it says about our country if such a deceptive and dangerous pair of people get elected, but it's not a very good thing at all.
Hi Livelonger-- I agree that the scariest people in the world are those who think that they know God's will for others. My philosophy has always been "live and let live" but I do find "holy rollers" like Sarah Palin very scary. They are kind of the American Taliban IMHO and I need to know that she really understands the separation of church and state-- George Bush certainly doesn't and I want no more of him and his ilk. It's his " God wants me to be President" kind of thinking that has gotten us where we are today. Unfortunately, McCain, who used to be a maverick, seems to have drunk the Kool-Aid. Too bad, because I used to lilke him. Thanks for reading and commenting.
Great Blog. I have been nervous about her since she first came on the scene. Her intollerance and her ability to remember people who don't support her and put them on a enemy list scares me.
me too-well put:-)
Sarah Palin is an embarassment, her investigation, her lies, her naivete, her deception, her ego...I don't remember a ticket for president on either side having this many lies come to surface -- this is amazing!! Thanks Robie2 wow!! you have set the public straight, if they will just see what is truly before our eyes and ears.
< I agree that the scariest people in the world are those who think that they know God's will for others>
I, too, have been saying that all along -- it's the outcry of millions of Americans...who does she think she is? scarey. also, she told Charlie "she wouldn't judge gays." Well, it's odd that she would say that because he wasn't asking her to and she jumped to that as an answer, which psychology 101 would indicate that her saying "not" in that context, was because she really "was."
It's like catching a child chewing in the kitchen, there's a piece of pie missing from the plate and they quickly say "not me" before they're even asked.
SURELY America will not vote this pair in.
I don't know, Marisue--America might just vote this pair in. People seem to vote on emotion rather than logic and Palin has an emotional appeal--positive or negative depending on who you are-- but an emotional appeal nonetheless.
Great aritcles, I a too am a Obama/Bidan supporter we can not make it another 4 years witht he republicains in offer period. McCann is to old I don't believe he will last the term either. I must admit I know nothing about Palin thanks
Michelle
For anyone who cares, after hearing this from several news sources, I am of the opinion that Karl Rove has become more active in McCain's campaigh than either he or FOX News would dare or care to admit.
Becuase it seems to me a clear ethical violation on the part of both Rove and Faux news, I think the ACLU or someone should look into this.
Either Rove is, or is not on McCain's campaign active advisory listing, and if he is, then he should do the right thing (IMHO a first for Rove!!!) and resign from Fixed News now!
BYW, didn't Matt Damon fo to Haiti to help out the victims there? He is, in my opinion, a much better person than Sarah Palin.
I think if we just listen to her...we will begin to see how unprepared she is. We don't even have to listen to the analysis. Just listen to her own words..all thru out her short political life. That's what persuaded me.
livelonger -- you took the words right out of my mouth and I'm so glad others are saying what I have been softly, ok maybe not, screaming!!!
she does not hesitate to lie. not a moment.
Mariesuewrites - I agree in general, but I have tired of trying to listen to her. She talks a lot but says nothing. This is not how I imagined a serious contender for high political office would act.
People are comparing her to Hillary. Hillary is a great candidate, Palin is just McCain and Rove's idea of window dressing. It's already becoming a "well known secret" that Rove had a hand in this, and he cynically chose her just to throw Obama off his stride - a typical Rovian way of conducting politics as if it were some back-room dealing.
Neither he nor McCain really have a good opinion about her - McCain just went along because he saw this as a way to bolster his dying campaign. It worked, and shame on us for perpetuation this choice by giving it credence. there were certainly plenty of other very well-prepared women McCain could have chosen from. women with integrity, knowledge and the ability to lead this nation.
He ignored them for the sex appeal factor - which apparently is working, since many men find Palin "hot"! So is that to be the criterion for future VP choices? How pretty they are and how well they will do in Male Appeal??? How utterly 50's that is! What a true sexist McCain and Rove and others of the ilk truly are!
So, I am done with talking about Palin. I'd rather talk about Biden. Check out my hub on Biden and let me know what you think.
I have to laugh also at one comedian who asked if that sleepy guy Fred Thompson was an idiot - his claim that Palin was the only candidate who could shoot and field dress a moose was wrong. Can she shoot and field dress an elephant, too, like Teddy Roosevelt?
He shot, field dressed many kinds of animals, including moose. And did that make him a great president? No, it was the force of his convictions, the vision of America, his policies and his ability to lead. He had ideas, policies and vision that he articulated in his speeches. He didn't hide behind carefully fluffed speeches that say very little about anything.
TR was a leader - Sarah Palin is a follower. Enough said.
Again we get fluff and trivia instead of ideas, views and intelligent answers to vitally important questions regarding our internal and external national security!
For all you americans out there, if you are scared of Pallin as a president: don't vote on Republicans.
For the non-american like me only one option left: Pray...
I'm praying....
Brilliant hub, clear, concise and thoughfully written. Palin is definitely scary, but what's more scary are her blatantly righteous supporters unwilling to even ask questions. The Republican clones that help prop her as the second coming have left me confused as to where, we as Americans, are headed. I'm seriously more than scared, I'm angry.
Hi All-- Sorry I'm a little behind in responding to all your wonderful comments.
Supreme Candles-- thanks so mucch for reading and Go Obama. I remember that Geraldine Ferrarro caused a stir in l988--but it was a bubble. May this be the same.
Chef Jeff-- what a great, meaty comment, as usual. I too have heard the rumors and would not be at all surprised to find Karl Rove up to his armpits in this one--it sure has his hallmark.
Marisue-- I think we just have to give her enough rope
Anime and Amanda-- I'm praying too, that the American people get it right this time--we are pretty fed up with Bush &Co so maybe there is hope.
Summer10-- I feell your pain and share your fear and anger.
Have you guys seen this posted today on YouTube?
Just checked out the youtube link Robie. Wish I could vote in this election. Seeing Alan Greenspan on the news last night talking about Lehman Brothers was a worrying experience. I've followed the International markets for years, and I can see how things are going, and it's not looking good!
I wish you could vote too, Amanda :-) Lehman going down is pretty scary. The markets are tanking today everywhere. Fasten your seat belt. The only upside is that this should be good for Obama ( i hope) since it was the Republicans who got us into all this starting with Reagan.
How about some interesting facts about Palin? This is sourced both on Time Magazine's web-zine & CNN. While mayor of Wasilla, AK Sarah Palin tried to ban books from the public library. Palin then threatened to fire a librarian that stood up to her book banning requests. Does the truth hurt? Tell all your friends & we'll see! As well, Palin's pocket book busting budgeting left a profitable Wasilla $22 million in debt by the end of her term. What else could they have expected from a tax, borrow & spend conservative?
It's becoming pretty clear that Palin's record is being obscured by her handlers and there are definitely some big question marks. My worry is the provincialism of her attitude and the rigidity of her views-- she is too limited to even know what she doesn't know and this is not a place for on the job training--we had that with Bush and look what happened.
And she got her first passport just over one year ago...
ahhh but Paraglider, she can see Russia from her front porch and that gives her foreign policy experience--at least that's what she says --arggggggghhhhhhhhhh. I want her to go back to Alaska and hunt moose:-)
{{arggggggghhhhhhhhhh}}
Careful - if you sound too moose-like she'll shoot you...
LOL. Fortunately I think her cleb status has peaked and people are getting the real picture-- now it's on to the next thing-- this campaign is desparate and a three ring circus
oh my, we have to go by what Matt Damon says he knows all. You people who let celebrities pull you around by the nose.
and what would you call Sarah Palin if not a celebrity??? Have a look at this:
TROLL ALERT!
Blackberry has been a member for six months and has publised ZERO Hubs.
DO NOT RESPOND TO BLACKBERRY. You're wasting your time and energy if you do and that's exactly what Blackberry wants.
This is a very well balanced and written Hub. That's a hard trick to pull off when you're discussing someone as blatantly venal as Sarah Palin.
Nice work robie2.
Thanks CWB--for the alert and for the kind words. I think Blackberry is back under the bridge scaring billygoats now:-) I usually don't deny comments unless they are ........oops I better not say or I'll get a bunch that I'll have to delete<sly grin>
I'm so happy to see how Hubbers voted on this hub, with most saying no to Sarah Palin's qualifications. Today's papers also say that Obama is ahead of McCain in all the polls. I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop on Palin, and it's coming down hard right now. After tonight's debate, she might be history. We'll see. Great hub.
Dear Robie2 and others engaged in this discussion, I'm late to reading this excellent and PRESCIENT hub! Posting now hours AFTER the Veep debate. Sarah Palin once again showed her true (meaning FAKE) self. Even "Faux" (aka "Fixed") News Polls (cute, Chef Jeff!) showed her losing the debate by roughly 62 to 38.
It's heartening to read intelligent hubs and comments by intelligent people!
9 more days ...C.S.
NY Lady, Mighty Mom and C.S.-- thanks so much for your comments. Right you are, C.S.-- It won't be long now and I think Obama has it in the bag-- thank God for both America and the world--but Palin is now on the national scene and I don't see her just going home to Alaska when this is over-- maybe she'll be the Howard Dean of '08 :-)
There is already talk about Palin hedging her bets for 2012. You've heard the news...siding with the Republicans who are not in favor of McCain right now, playing up to the party leaders, positioning herself for a race four years down the road. Apparently, she's pretty good at it, meaning, using McCain to position herself for the future.
McCain is history, I think. (But I don't want to jinx anything, so I'm knocking on wood.)
Meanwhile, I hope this country's voters are smart enough to not allow her an entree into 2012. Her fate should be Savonarola's.

Yeah...chick flick. I'm hoping that's the outcome.
Just to set the record straight, she didn't request that any books be banned from the provincial library, she put out the question that went something like, how can books of questionable content be removed, and the reply from the librarian was something like, they can't and they won't. Thus ensued a two-year nightmare for the librarian, and maybe that's the point. Mayor / Guv Palin made life in Wasilla for the librarian untenable. The librarian left, and you can find her account of this on the Internet (actually, your link leads to just that information).
Despite all that, kudos for the Savonarola likeness. Maybe Barbie Sarah will soon be promoting the burning of mirrors, although I kind of doubt it, because after all, she was a beauty queen.
Great Hub, Robie2, as always. Boy oh boy, can't you get our dander up?
