SNL is one of those shows that goes through rough patches and then has flashes of brilliance. These flashes of brilliance tend to come around election season when there is a lot of fodder for comedy. In other words, politicians are funny.

I can just picture the look of glee on Lorne Michaels' face when the Eliot Spitzer scandal happened or when it was discovered the Hillary Clinton lied about being under sniper fire on a trip to Bosnia. The writers and performers on Saturday Night Live must run to get their newspapers in the morning. A good story will do the heavy lifting for them.

SNL is pretty good right now. It's not great. The digital shorts are often funny. Maya Rudolph is consistently hilarious and on point in her roles. It's always kind of fun to see the star host in skits.
