Common Sense Tips to Save Money on Gas

There are alot of ways to save money on gas such as keeping the tires properly inflated, remove unnecessary junk from the trunk to reduce weight etc. etc. However, many people don't realize the importance of driving habits and their impact on fuel consumption. Here are a few simple tips that can drastically cut down on your fuel costs:

1) Gradual Acceleration - Gradually accelerating up to speed saves a tremendous amount of fuel as opposed to drastic acceleration which eats up large amounts of fuel in a short time. Those folks who "punch it" and peel out at the stop light not only cause an unsafe driving situation but also burn up alot more fuel. Hard acceleration also causes more wear and tear on the engine and other automobile components. One should gradually accelerate up to speed to optimize fuel consumption.

2) Stop Speeding - You can also save alot in fuel costs (and avoid speeding tickets) by driving a bit slower on the highway. As the article below (see link below) states "In a typical family sedan, every 10 miles per hour you drive over 60 is like the price of gasoline going up about 54 cents a gallon". That's because the wind resistance increases exponentially as you travel faster, especially at highway speeds. The faster you drive, the harder your car has to work to overcome the increased wind resistance, which increases fuel consumption drastically. The link below takes you to an article that has further details on this.

3) Obey the Speed Limits on Surface Streets - Not only is this the law, and not only will it help you avoid traffic tickets, it will actually save you money. That's because the engineers help set speed limits to a speed that will result in the fewest stops at traffic lights. Most surface streets are designed by civil engineers that have efficiency in mind, and set the speed limit that will result in the fewest stops. Therefore, if you obey the posted speed limit, you'll probably find yourself stopping at fewer traffic lights which will save fuel.
