Fuel consumption can be reduced by 10% if you drive at 80-90 kilometers per hour. Most drivers usually accelerate then engage the brake pedals in a snap. It takes quite an effort to stop a car at running speed which in turn translates to more fuel consumption. Thos who drive automatics are advised to take time accelerating to give the transmission time to shift into the higher gears. For manuals, drivers should shift early to the higher gears to keep down the engines rpm. Lower RPM translates to less fuel consumed.

Running with under-inflated tires pushes the engine to use more fuel to keep the vehicle moving.  Under-inflated tires offers more resistance which can increase fuel consumption by 5%.  since tire wear out over time than any other car parts, it is wise to invest on heavy duty tires. Regularly check the tires pressure before using your car to get an accurate reading becaause tires that have been warmed up increase in pressure.

Never neglect your air filter. Doing so will cost youmore fuel.  A dirty air filter prevents the flow of air to your engine. This in turn will prevent your engine from running smoothly.  Engines that do not run smoothly need more fuel to run.  Some airfilters only need to cleaned and not changed.  One way of checking if your airfilter is still good is to hold it to the sun. If you cannot see light coming through it, then its time to change it.

The less weight your car has the less fuel it consumes. Camper shells, roof racks... can increase fuel consumption as much as 5%. If you don't need them for a drive, then remove them.  There are lots of detachable camper shells and racks.  Doing this will surely save you lots and lots...

Always have your vehicle checked. Remember that a poorly tuned engine can increase fuel consumption by 50% or more.  Cahnge spark plugs regularly.

Smaller cars don't really mean lesser perfomance. Although newer and more impressive models have flooded the market lately... you don't really need to have the latest gas guzzling SUV or Truck to go to the nearest mall.  A suzuki Swift would do just fine. But again some would argue that it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
