Save Money Making Junk Furniture Look New & Expensive...
60I am, by nature, a pinch-a-penny type of person and when my sister trashed an already old and out of date 4 piece wicker dresser and nightstand set my husband wanted to throw them away and buy new. Of course I wouldn’t hear of it “I can fix them, I can make them better” I argued. When he finally relented and let me have my way I dragged the set outside and started hand sanding one piece at a time. After sanding the smaller nightstand (always with the grain) I wiped it all down with a clean dry rag and headed out to Home Depot for some wood stain (2 gallons of Bombay Mahogany) and handles (17 total) which cost me around 50 bucks give or take a few dollars for everything. Naturally, my husband saw where my vision was going and pitched in to help. After three coats of stain and a day of drying we screwed in the handles and “drum role please”, a beautiful newly restored dresser set that would have cost us hundreds upon hundreds of dollars. So the next time you think your furniture is beyond redemption, just use a little imagination, a reluctant spouse, and head to your local hardware store for inspiration…
