We all have bills that we really hate to pay. Each month there are many household expenses that take up a majority of our paychecks. From food to utilities and cars to cable...it all adds up rather quickly. If you are trying to save money, it can almost seem like a fruitless battle.

Household expenses are the best place to start if you have made a commitment to begin saving money. It is where you have the most control of spending. Even by reducing expenses in small amounts, you will be able to see all of those little things can really add up and begin to see your savings grow.

Eat all your meals from home. Going out to dinner once a week can equal to a whole week of groceries. To simplify the process as much as possible, always plan meals in advance and generate grocery lists from the menu.

Reduce the amount of electricity that is wasted. Turn off all lights and unneccecary appliances when not in use. Replace light bulbs and appliances that are not energy-efficient.

Replacing small appliances with energy-efficent counterparts usually pay for themselves by using less energy rather quickly, while large appliances may take one to two years.

Generally speaking, high efficiency appliances are more expensive to purchase; however, they pay for themselves in decreased energy bills. Energy efficient appliances emit less pollution and are also attractive selling points should you decide to sell your home later down the road.

Appliances with an Energy Star label is the best choice. They exceed federal government efficiency standards.

Take steps to use less water throughout the day. Taking shorter showers, shutting off the water while you brush your teeth and only running the dishwasher when full are very simple ways to reduce daily water usuage.

Take simple steps to reduce transportation costs. If you live near a public bus stop, take the bus into work. This mode of transportation save you fuel costs, car maintenance, vehicle insurance and more. Join or start a carpool with fellow co-workers, relatives or friends that live nearby if you are unable to take public transportation.

Bundle Internet, cable and phone services. It may be possible to receive a lower overall price by bundling up services for Internet, phone and cable from the same provider. A savings of $20 per month will equate to saving $240 per year.

Eliminate extra services. Get rid of unnecessary services like Caller ID, call waiting and 3-Way calling on your phone service. Cancel cable or satellite services altogether and watch local channels only and save approximately $1,000 per year or more.

Always pay your bills on time. Paying all those little (sometimes big), fees really add up while it adversely affects your credit. It really is very simple way to save money.

These are all great suggestions. I switched all of my lights to energy efficient bulbs and it made a decent size dent in our energy bill.

A great way to save on cell phone expenses is to use a prepaid cell phone package. I've used the Tracfone budget package costing $9.99 for 50 minutes a month and am saving about $25.00 from my previous contract
