I'm Sure Gas Stations & Companies Hate Me

Learning how to save on gas prices is a big concern because the price of Gas is downright ridiculous! With prices fluctuating around $3/gallon, it's a wonder why everyone is rushing to figure out better ways to drive on water. For some those kits are outside their norms, in which I've found a few other small tricks to save up to 20% at EVERY gas station despite their pricing attempts. No wonder why they hate me so much! Ha ha!

Always Get 5-10% CashBack on Your Gas

* If you are not currently making good usage of a cashback credit card to purchase your gas, you are wasting literally hundreds of dollars a year. This is an HUGE mistake. Let me explain...

* Cashback credit cards are regular credit cards that give you a higher percentage cashback (generally up to 10%) when you make a purchase at a gas station.

* If you don't pay with a cashback credit card, it's similar to "tipping" the gas station. Why pad their wallets when you can pad your own? On average, a typical family will save approx. $200/year paying for their gas with a cashback credit card. Doesn't seem like much, but trust me it adds up. For some that could be the cost to drive out of state and back.

* Remember when gas stations used to charge a lower price for cash purchases versus what they charged for credit card purchases? Ever wonder how come they don't do it anymore? It's simple. The gas stations have simply raised the cash price to the credit card price. Reason beings is that they pocket the difference on all cash purchases.

* My favorite gas rebate credit card is the Discover® Open Road (SM) Card, which features:

- 5% Cashback Bonus® on gas and auto maintenance purchases.

- 5% to 20% Cashback Bonus® at top online retailers.

- Up to 1% Cashback Bonus on all other purchases.

- 0% Intro APR for 6 months on Purchases, and 12 months on Balance Transfers.

How to pick the RIGHT Gas Credit Card for You

There are 2 types of gas cashbcack credit cards:

1) Gives higher cashback at ALL gas stations, including diesel

2) Gives higher cashback only at certain gas stations

* I recommend using a card that works at ALL gas stations so you always have the option of shopping around for the best price. One exception is the Chase BP Card which gives you 10% cashback on all BP purchases for 2 months. This is GREAT "if" you use BP frequently.

* My top pick is still nonetheless the Discover® Open Road (SM) Card. If you have excellent credit and spend more than $10,000 a year on your credit card, then I'd recommend the AmEx Blue Cash Card (5% off gas after spending $6500). Also, the Chase Perfect Card is a great Visa card that gives 6% off all gas for the first 2 months, then 3% thereafter.

* For Students in particular, my favorite card is the Universal Entertainment Student MasterCard®. If you currently have Bad Credit, or you carry a Balance each month, then you will need to use some form of specialized card.

How to use your Gas Cashback Credit Card Correctly

Credit card companies get paid approximately 3% on every transaction made. If you use your cashback credit card optimally, then the credit card company will actually LOSE money on your account. I'll explain.

* Use your Gas Cashback Credit Card ONLY for Gas:

The idea is to save money on gas. Some credit cards are designed to limit the overall amount of cashback they give. While these cards work on any purchase, they typically only give 1% cashback on non-gas purchases. By restricting your purchases specifically for gas, you'll optimize the use of the card to save the most money on gas.

* Don't Carry a Balance With Your Gas Cashback Credit Card. Credit card companies earn money with fees and interest. Don't let them do so by paying off your balance in full each month (and on time). This negates any charges, fees, and/or interest that may have accrued. Hmmmm.... makes you wonder... do the credit card companies hate us too????

* Think of your Gas Credit Card as an ATM card with cashback:

If you think of it like an ATM card, you won't get stuck with a balance you can't afford to pay off each month. Plus, you'll save money. Pretty neat eh!?

* Are you enthused to learn more about selecting a credit card? What's the best card if you need to carry a balance? How to know if you'll get approved for a card, How many cards should you carry.... Read our How to "Cheat" the Credit Cards Chapter.

* Don't know your credit score? You should! Visit Annual Credit Report. Learn how you can keep up with your credit score without ever being charged. Reason being, your credit score will help you pick the best card.

More Ways to Save Another 10% Or More On Gas

We promised you we could help you save up to 20% at any gas station. Use a gas cashback credit card and follow these tips.

* Shop Non-Brand Name Gas Stations: Most non-brand name gas stations use the exact same product as the brand names. Save a few cents every gallon getting a very similar product.

* Use the Right Grade of Gasoline: Some people believe premium grade is the best for cars. Not true. Read your car manual to see what's recommended by the manufacturer (many times they recommend regular grade.) Use the lowest grade recommended.

* Don't Top Off: Many studies have shown that the "top off" usually remains in the hose or is lost to evaporation. Don't bother!

* Avoid Sudden Stop and Go: Driving less aggressively WILL increase your gas mileage. Rapid acceleration and braking burns more fuel and is harder on your vehicle. Using cruise control is the most efficient for gas mileage.

* Tire Pressure: Driving on tires that are not fully inflated can cost you 10% or more in lost gas. Check your pressure once a month.

* Hydrogen-Water Conversion Kits: Hybrid conversion Kit that allows you to save up to 60% on gas, and is completely reversible, and works on ANY car. Imagine using all tips, a gas card, AND this kit at the same time. Can you say "money in the bank!?"
