Saving on heating costs is possible.

The winter season doesn't have to mean the dreaded high costs of heating your home anymore. The average household can spend quite a bit of money on heating their home and that can leave them feeling like they're left out in the cold. Many people try to delay turning on their heat in an attempt to save money. That can be a thing of the past as there are ways to cut heating costs for every home without cutting out the warmth factor.

Saving on heating doesn't have to be uncomfortable, is easy enough for anyone to try and proves to be helpful and effective for all. Not only does saving on heating help save money but it is also an earth friendly measure which helps save the environment by saving on energy and precious natural resources.

Set your thermostat

Maintain the system and the temp.

The easiest thing to do to save money on heating bills is to maintain your thermostat temperature on one level at all times. By keeping the thermostat set to anywhere from sixty-eight degrees to seventy-three degrees, the temperature within the home will remain at a comfortable level without using an excessive amount of energy or gas. It takes less energy and or gas to maintain a steady temperature within that targeted degree range than it does for a heating system to have to start up and shut down throughout the day.

Properly maintaining your heating system will ensure that your heating system is running safely and efficiently and therefore not draining your pocket with extra energy use cost. Central heating systems need to be properly cleaned throughout the year. Doing so aides in a smoother function and flow of air and therefore less energy usage. Having cleaner vents also removes the risk of a fire caused by any dust that may be built up around the air vents as well. Heating units should be inspected yearly by a professional to ensure that it is in proper working order and functioning economically and safely.

Maintain your home as well.

Maintenance on your home is the most effective method for saving money on heating costs year after year. When present, drafts and leaks can cause heating bills to sky rocket while leaving the home cold. The biggest sources of air leaks come from old and drafty windows as well as the gaps around door frames. Proper insulation along with updated windows and properly framed doors are recommended in these cases as a long-term solution to losing heat and saving money. These solutions can also save money in the summer on cooling costs and energy bills.

If making repairs are not possible then there are quick fixes that are inexpensive and readily available at most retailers. Such products include various forms of foam which help seal any cracks in a window frame, the foam is available in a spray can. Other products include foam liners with adhesive that adhere to the inside of a door frame and metal or plastic mud back splashes for door bottoms, both of which help prevent the escaping of heat and the entering of cold.

Supplement your heat.

Additional portable heating units are available and can be purchased to help with heating and essentially heating costs. Electrical rotating heating towers can be purchases from any retailer and come anywhere from desk to floor standing sizes in a wide range of affordable prices. Heating towers are designed to evenly distribute both the existing heat in a room and the heat that the tower produces. This means that the primary heating system will need less energy and or gas to maintain the set temperature because the air in the room is being redistributed instead of wasted. These heating towers use much less energy than the larger heating systems use and make it easier to maintain a comfortable temperature within a desired area. Most heating towers do not use any dangerous gases and are made to be touch-safe as well as have automatic settings to maximize savings and prevent overheating. Using a portable heating tower can significantly increase comfort while decreasing heating cost within your home.

It's amazing how much money you can save, especially over the long haul just by adding more <A href="http://www.better-insulation.net/">insulat We did this a couple years ago, and while as with anything, there is an up front cost, it took about 18 months to recoup our initial investment, and it couldn't have come at a beter time as just as we were at our break even point is when the local utilities decided to raise the rates about 35%. This is one of the best ways to save money and stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

I love this post! It is so informative and so true. Of course in India, we have to worry more about natural cooling than heating:)

Check out this website http://www.copperwiki.org -- it is a wiki about sustainable living and is free to edit. It would be great if you shared this information there, because it is essentially a wisdom bank where everyone pools their knowledge and experiences.

How can this be. One site tells you to turn the temp down - then up - then down, etc. NOW THIS SITE says leave it on one setting. What is going on. Which way is correct and WHY? Thank you.

Good information. I found out about the first thing you said the hard way. I thought I was going to save heat in my house several years ago by turning the heat down when I went to work. I then waited till late to turn it back on. I ended up using more heat at the end of day. Lesson: its easier to heat an already heated house than heat a cold house.
