Scabbies is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, variety hominis, as shown by the Italian biologist Diacinto Cestoni in the 18th century. It produces extreme, fidgety skin rashes when the impregnated female tunnels into the stratum corneum of the skin and sticks eggs in the tunnel. The larvae, which hatch in 3-10 days, try to move about on the skin, moulting into a "nymphal" stage, and then mature into adult mites. The adult mites live 3-4 weeks in the host's skin.
The action of the mites being active within the skin and on the skin itself produces an bad itch which may resemble an allergic reaction in visual aspect. The presence of the eggs produces a heavy allergic reaction which, in turn, produces more itching.
Scabbies is transmitted readily, often throughout an entire family, by skin-to-skin touch with an infected person (e.g. bed mates, classmates, daycare), and thus is occasionally, although inaccurately, classed as a sexually transmitted disease. Spread by clothing, bedding, or towels is a less considerable risk, though attainable.
Direct touch - like holding hands - is the most common mean to transmit scabbies, but because the mites that cause scabbies can live as long as 2 to 3 days in clothing, bedding, or dust, it's possible for your child to catch scabbies from other individual who shares the same infected bed, linens, or towels.
Anyone can get scabbies - little infants, adults, kids like you. They don't care if you're clean, dirty, wealthy, or misfortunate. They live on or in skin of humans. You can catch them too!

My grandson has been diagnosed with eczema,however this is not contagous both his father, grandfather and I are now itching to beat all get out when in shower and hot water runs over our skin. My grandson lives with his mother whom refuses to listen to any possibilities of this maybe being misdiagnosed. what do we do? The break outs he has looks just like the pictures for scabbies and it is getting passed to other people.

I am employed in a nursing home, also a home to scabbies for at least a year. I have treated myself 5 times with permethrin cream. I continue to get scabbies from the residence at the nursing home.
