The Schnoodle is one of the hybrid breeds that comes in a variety of sizes, since there are different sizes of the parent breeds. A Schnoodle is a hybrid dog resulting from the cross of a Schnauzer and a Poodle. It is important to keep in mind that there are three size categories of Schnauzers, Miniature, Standard and Giant, as well as three size categories of Poodles, Miniature, Toy and Standard. In addition there is another size of Poodle, known as the Teacup that is sold by breeders but not recognized as separate by the Kennel Clubs.

The Schnoodle can therefore range in size from a very small dog of under 10 pounds to a large canine hybrid of up to 80 pounds. All will have the same general features including the curly to wavy slightly coarse to the touch coat, the well balanced and athletic build and the longer, well boned legs typically to both breeds. The coat can come in a variety of colors from a salt and pepper pattern to sable, black, white or even parti-colored dogs. The coat tends to be lighter underneath in the dense inner coat and darker on the outside, giving a very unique appearance that seems to change as the dog moves.

The head of the Schnoodle can be more Poodle-like or more like the Schnauzer. The muzzle may be tapered or square and a noticeable beard and eyebrows are often present. The ears may be very V-shaped and turned over at the mid point, or they may be longer and more pendulous like a poodle. They tend to have slightly longer and slightly arched necks, well developed shoulders and moderately deep chests and rib cages. The hindquarters are strong and well developed but still very in balance with the dog.

Some dog types have been bred to be around people, and both the parent breeds of the Schnoodle definitely have this background. These dogs do not do well left alone for long periods of time or when required to live outside away from the family. These dogs crave human attention and are happy to snuggle up in your lap or simply lie at your feet.

Very intelligent, the Schnoodle is quick to learn both good and bad habits so training has to be positive, consistent and firm. They are not typically headstrong and strive to please their owners. They respond very well to children and other pets and often bond strongly with non-canine pets when raised together. Occasionally some Schnoodles can be prone to chasing, especially cats and other dogs, so be sure to socialize early and consistently.

The Schnoodle will need routine, regular grooming to keep the coat in top condition. They are a very low shedding dog and may be suitable for allergy sufferers since they have little dander. Routine bathing will not be a problem, as they love water and the attention of having a bath. Many owners of this canine hybrid choose to clip the coat either in a puppy clip or a Schnauzer cut to help keep grooming to a minimum.

Ear infections can be a problem in the hybrids with the turned over ears, so routinely check the ears for any waxy build up or foul odor. Remove any long hairs in the ears by plucking, this will help decrease the likelihood of infection. Always dry the insides of the ears well after bathing.
