Sex Education in Schools (India) – Is it helpful or harmful?
As you all may be aware, Government of India is planning to introduce sex education in schools. There are lots of discussions going on the subject and objections are also being raised from different corners of the society. Let’s do some analysis on this issue.
1. Sex is an integral part of our life.
I am sure you all will agree with this. One of life’s most important and wonderful feature is the ability of reproduction and sexual activity is inevitable for reproduction.
2. At what age a child understand sex?
About 20-25 years back in India, children below 16 years of age were not found to be much aware of sex and they never used to discuss about it. But now the situation is different. Today even a 12 years old child is aware of it and talks about it.
3. Influence of the media.
This has been an important factor on this issue, particularly in the last few years. Movies, music videos and such other programs have been exposing too much which has increased the curiosity among children about sex. This is leading them to experiment sex and land into unwanted problems.
My opinion
As children are getting information about sex at smaller age one way or the other and we cannot stop the media from such activities, I feel it is better to give sex education because it will kill the curiosity and make the children understand the positive and negative sides of it.
