Sci-Fi vs. Religion: Which God Suits You.
61You Believe In What?
As far back as we know humans have always believed in some sort of supernatural being or had a role model that they modeled their behavior after. Predominately it has been some form of a god or deity that controls us one way or another. Setting up a code or various rules for us to live by. These rules were notoriously given to the most holy of that particular god's followers, in were he/she distributed the rules out, chose the others to lead, and handed out the punishments. In early civilizations the gods handed out the punishments themselves, usually in some form of sickness or natural disaster.
The ancient tribes as well as the inhabitants of Northern America had their beliefs in the Earth and the environments that surrounded them. These gods were enhanced as time progressed, like the gods and goddess's of the Egyptians, Toltec's, Greeks, Romans, Gauls, and all they way across the planet. The East had their version's as well, but were greatly suppressed by the rulers of the regions.
As we progress through history the Judaic tribes developed the version of the one god. Through centuries of warfare, murder, and genocide this became the predominate belief to all but a few. Now people always had wars over religion, supposedly started by the gods themselves. The Greek Trojan war. The Great Persian Empire march across the known lands. The Egyptians and Romans both destroying most and converting those that did not believe. Usually by sword or lance point, which seems to be the preferred method of conversion by any god. Then the prophets (or should I say profits) came into the picture to completely eradicate the notions of the heretics and pagans. Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad, almost every modern religion has their story about the saviour, but in general most everyone has the one god concept.
As new worlds were discovered Christianity in particular was spread. To the "Indians", the Incans, and the rest of the America's. Most of the time by sword point just as was the other heretics previously. Even the Cathers who believe in the one god were mercilessly hunted down and killed, just as the heretic Muslims of the Middle East were. All sides seem to be justified to kill in "their gods name" to spread the message.
Now we have in our time, the "cultured and civilized" peoples of the Earth relative peace between the religions. I say relative in a very loose term. Now that in most places especially in United States different forms of religion are popping up. Pagan, agnostic, so many different forms of Christianity, Muslim, Hindu, Buddist, Science, Scientology, Star Wars. Yes, I said Star Wars. The force, the way of the Jedi, the Sith. If we can have Satanist's yes there are followers of the Sith. We have the Gospels according to Lucas now. An that's not all, Star Trek has a major following. Many other movie and television science fiction shows are developing religious followings. People are getting married in uniform, following the creeds, codes, and characters just as they follow other religions. Jedi is now an official religion. Parents are complaining and blogging I may add about how their children are following these kooky cults. Could be worse, they could follow the Branch Davidians I guess. This is becoming a very quickly growing culture. Conventions, groups, churches and services are growing rapidly everywhere. To me this is not such a bad thing. I prefer a "radical Jedi" over a radical christian or Muslim any day. I've not been attacked or harassed by any of the Jedi cult.
To those who know me know I follow one thing, science. I guess I could be considered agnostic. I read the bible, Koran, Torah as well as any other religious document I can get my hands on. I enjoy the learning and the very entertaining stories. My quickly favorite religion is an old one to me though. It was started in 1978 by Rev. Glen A. Larson...lol. Battlestar Galactica. Just like Star Wars it combines many religions, even the one god. A recent series was just finished with several spin-offs and a new series coming out named Caprica. I of course being a profound follower bought the new un-rated version as fast as I could. I own all the episodes and the books. I have my idols now named action figures. I went to service every week and as often as I can now that I own them. My prophet is Starbuck. Always was. I wish I could be like Adama but my life is more like the character of Starbuck. I don't believe in this because of course, to me this universe and everything around it was created by science. Facts, not myth. Billions of years of combinations and evolution put us together. This is how I believe.
Isn't that what religion is about? Modeling your life around what you believe to be right. Finding a path in life that is right and has meaning. What is wrong with modeling your life after what you choose? Isn't that what freedom of religion is about? I would be a better person if I could have the peace of Obi-One. The Protestants didn't like the way the Catholic Church did and broke away. All religions, even Christianity developed from other religions. I believe that everyone has the right to choose whatever they want to believe in. If that makes you a better person, makes sense to you. Then so be it. I shall sit back and wait for the peaceful and calm comments from my fellow humans the Christians. I wish you all "God's Peace", "May the Force Be With You", "Live Long and Prosper", and of course "Good Hunting".

Thanks. I'm with you on the boat. Enjoy your day.
Once I wondered into a Treky convention in a hotel. – Just to let you know I have witnessed one of the meetings. I do not believe any culture of idolatry and worship of mainstream media –marketing of movies, television--meetings of people dressing up in costumes for fun-- should be compared with--the devoted, and faithful whom truly loves and believes in GOD. Some actually are educated on every godless debate and still have that gift of faith- and we serve without any freakish behavior including pushing our non-religious beliefs on others! However, it is a good way to throw in some links for Sci fi books on your spot here dude. I appreciate your right to be agnostic (which does mean –you neither believe nor do not)—right? However, I would sure hate to be standing before a God on that random Pascal wager there is one and have written this type of defamatory – slam on the faithful. For the life of me, I have to wonder why a young man would find such joy in arguing with his elderly mother- his agnostic – or merchandising religion on her deathbed- what does that accomplish? I think many of the faithful will agree with me- you are free in the US to be a Christian, Muslim, a Treky or agnostic just please respect the faith of others. Please put in reserve your scientific wit on those who get such joy believing in their mish mashed VMAT2 less genes-! It is not faiths you made up on the internet to get bleeps of attention and make a few bucks hitting some links. You are right about your strand internet theory- on your bio—the 'you know" linking into each other on a particle board filled with radiation. Your god of science is overturned at every turn. For the faithful, our god is consistent. Just the basic Ten Commandments will do. Oh and just FYI some of the greatest minds did believe in God, including Einstein it is just his followers that have lost their way- gosh dude that happens in every religion and movie cult.
Thanks for the comment Tiara, I certainly didn't know what would happened if I, lowly me, questioned the all powerful Throne. I will immediately throw down my beliefs in science and jump back into the loving embrace of the master. I guess I lost my way!
To many years growing up in religious schools, leading FCA, and years of studying religion led me to one conclusion. Even if your god exists, I want no part of that psychotic ego-maniac. Even his perfect creations revolted against him, I guess it's just SO good to worship his almighty presence for eternity eh? Go be a slave to your god, I'll deal with the consequences. Trust me, we'll both be in the same place together. A box, rotting away on this tiny miserable little planet floating through space. Your hope for an eternity filled with singing angels and gold lined streets are so delusional it's not even funny. But hope, pray, and believe if that's what gets you through this life. It's your right.
For the most part I absolutely loved your article, but why oh why did you have to add that snide little remark about Christians at the end? Why not the other freaks?
I have to totally agree with your assessment that Star Wars, Jedi and Star Trek are religions. I feel that evolution should be included, because like Christianity, it takes a lot of faith to believe in. Even more so since the theory of evolution changes constantly!
I think your overview is spot on, great job! I am a Christian, but I won't rant, although you are biased against religion, I have to say it's a fair overview and a fun read.
I especially like your live and let live policy. I have no problem with people of other religions witnessing, and hope I will always be allowed the same courtesy, but bickering and forcing my religion on others is not even Biblical.
Final thoughts: I think the Jedi religion is mainly based in the UK right? And when it blossoms into a "church", what do we call it? Jedi-ism? Jedoo? I will join when they get real lightsabers. I think I have concrete proof that Star Trek is a religion. I recently wrote an article about "finding your inner Klingon." My point was that a lot of people dress up, and they do so because they lack the courage to be themselves as they want to be. I had one poster actually sign up on Hubpages to rant at me about how wrong I was. I am so flattered. You only see these types of responses on religious or political articles, so perhaps that means that politics is a religion too? (I know it's not a religion, but rather it is closely tied to religious values).
Thanks for a great read!
Thanks for the comment. Sorry about the snide remarks but have been getting some pretty crude comments and a few threats at times. Laughable, but I get a little snippy at times. My own poor judgement and one of my many, many faults. I have a few friends that are Jedi extremist's, I shall ask them what they shall name thier church. Thanks again and have fun.
I'm sorry to hear about that, and it's understandable. It's hard to blame you for reacting to what you see! I look forward to hearing more about these Jedi - I find it a fascinating phenomenom.

Well that is a new take on religion and a very interesing concept. Some are obviously less harmful than the indoctrination of others. What ever floats your boat say I!
