Dog Food Review:

Ol' Roy scored higher than this stuff. I can't believe that Science Diet is a vet. suggested diet. Science Diet has a history of pet food recalls and a Class Action filed against it. Given the high numbers of pet illness and pet death associated with a Science Diet menu it isn't hard to see an "all grain" diet with just a touch of turkey is a killing combination. If this is what your vet has suggested for dog's diet I would suggest changing vets.

Do you have another dog or cat food you would like to have tested? Please submit a comment and I'll check it out.

Science diet uses the toxic product in their foods. Just because the product didn't make the recall list doesn't make it safe. Look for a pet food without grains!

Our dog has eaten Science Diet dry food for years. However, about a month or so ago, she started exhibiting all of the symptoms consistent with the "poisoning" information in the latest recall. It makes me very suspicious and we've started feeding her browned hamburger, rice and green beans for now. She still hasn't recovered. I'd like Science Diet to make a statement about their food.

Hello,

Our dog has been eating Science diet for over three years. When the news broke about the recall, we felt safe feeding him because Science diet was not on the list. Recently our 10 year old black mutt, Sumo, got violently sick. He is weak, throwing up, not eating, and has lose stool. What should we do?

Please respond!!!

Thank you

P.S. Has anyone else noticed that Science Diet's price has increased and portions have decreased.

My senior dog was eating science diet senior dry food until he became sick and had to be put down. He had all of the symptoms. Will science diet be added to the list. Even my vet said classic poisoning case.

On March 10th, 2007 our almost 12 year old Poodle, Princess was perfectly fine until I bought another bag of Hill's Science Diet Adult Small Bites dry dog food that she had always eaten. That night she started drinking 8/20 oz bottles of water in a 24 hour period. This went on then I took her to a vet and they run blood & urine test on her. Princess' sugar & ketone levels were off the chart. They gave her meds & IV & kept her overnight. I picked her up the next day & thought she was going to make it thinking her dry food was fine so I gave her more of it. On March 29th, 2007 Princess had to be put to sleep because she was in severe kidney failure, vomiting, loose stools, bleeding from the nose, etc. I just know it had to be the food but the FDA & Science Diet won't check it. It's something in it that killed my baby. I feel just like someone has reach in my chest & pulled my heart out. Princess I hope you are playing in Heaven & now healthy. Mommy & Daddy miss you Little Girl

Hi, all. We have been feeding our little dachshund's Science Diet small bites for the last year. I thought we were safe when it wasn't on the recall list but went ahead and switched all of our animals to a raw diet.

Now the 1-year-old, my daughter's baby, has diahrea (sic?) and is drinking more water than normal. Does anyone know where I can find a list of the symptoms for this poisoning? I thought we'd gotten really lucky because our foods weren't on the recall lists, but I don't trust these companies at all.

My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a baby from this. I hope no one ever buys commercial pet food again and they go out of business.

Can anyone suggest an organic canine pet food or an acceptable substitute for the Sciene Diet I/D Canine, both dry and wet. Our Yorkie has a very sensitive digestive system and does not seem to be able to digest most other foods. Any help is appreciated. Ralph Schirmer email: rschirmer@cinci.rr.com

I've noticed the makers of Science Diet are not responding to the concerns about the dry small bites dog food. Curious. Note to Ralph Schirmer, we fed our dog browned hamburger (rinsed with water) and mixed with rice as a substitute for the Science Diet I/D canine food. We heard that is a reasonable replacement. Our vet suggested adding green beans and a multivitamin.

My dog died a horrible death, and I believe it was from the science diet food.I have four other dogs that are fine. but, the one that died has had crystels in her urine months before she died. the vet gave her science diet (dry and can) for this.. a few weeks later she became violently ill. she was fine one day, then the next she hemorage. when I took her to the vet, they kept asking me if she had anything toxic.. at that time, I didn't associate the food and toxic.

I had to watch my dog for almost two days go down hill. she was bleeding internally. she was only 5 years old.. Why don't science diet admit they have poisen food..

The real kicker, I still see the vets selling this food..

Pat,

This is a sad story. I am so sorry. The bad part of all this is the vets have been as mis-lead as we have about the quality of the pet food we are serving our pets.

Michelle  says:

Is this true? My vet just put my dog on I/D because she has canine IBS. Is it really one of the ones that should be recalled? How can the vets sell it if they know it is not safe? I just don't understand that...

Michelle,

Our vets are as in the dark as we are ....as consumers. Your vet doesn't know anything about the recalls, just ask I'm sure I am right.

Yes, it is all true.

I have fed my Boston Terrier Science Diet Puppy Small bites since when we first got her, well in May, she just turned a year old, so I switched her to the Science Diet Adult Small bites and then I noticed she was losing hair more than normal, I thought at first she was just shedding her winter coat, but now she has lost so much hair that on some spots, you can see her skin, I'm not sure if this is the cause of the dog food or what has caused this. Please someone help me out, I am just scared of the recall and I want to be able to save her before anything bad happens. I did recently lose a Boston Terrier about a couple of months before I got her and I just don't want to lose another.

Susie,

What you have described is probably due to corn. Corn causes hair loss and endless scratching and itching. I'm sure you know that Science Diet does have a history of recalls and is not a very good product. This one scored only a single point. Wal Mart stuff is doing better than 1 out of 10. If Nature's Best is what you are feeding you could do better by letting your dog graze in the cow pasture.

My 15 yo Yorkie had large bladder stones years ago (because a friend kept feeding him deli food). Since then he's been on Sciend Diet wet CD which I know is not good. He's now a bit sick and doesn't want to touch it. Does anyone know of a natural substitute for this, perhaps with an additive, if necessary? Thanks. Please also send your response to my email at ratmoppett@verizon.net.

My Little Cocker Spaniel Breann started eating Sceince Diet Natures Best about two months ago. I bought it from Petsmart. She had a blood test not long before I changed to this brand. Her Bun/Crea were normal. She passed away a few days ago from kidney failure.

Hi Susan. I have a bag of science diet nature's best chicken and brown rice small bites dog food with me and I noticed the ingredients are a bit different: chicken, brown rice, whole grain wheat, craked pearl barley, soybean meal, chicken meal, pork fat etc. Would you still deem this dog food safe? I bought Canidae's Platinum dog food, but she doesn't seem to be liking the taste and am thinking about switching over to this.

What are the toxins in Science Diet that you mention?"Science diet uses the toxic product in their foods. Just because the product didn't make the recall list doesn't make it safe. Look for a pet food without grains!"

I read with horror on the toxic ingredients embedded in Science Diet. I had always thought this was a great dog food. Two of my friends actually highly recommended it for my 3-month old Puppy when I brought her home from the pet shop.(She was on Eukanuba while at the pet shop.) I nearly bought the food for my little darling in the pets' supplies store, when a nice lady who was also in the store buying food for her dog, walked up to me and advised me against getting Science Diet. She told me to read through the ingredients on the label carefully. They were mainly by-products and grains, which were unhealthy and indigestible for dogs. After examining the ingredients, I agreed with what she told me. She then advised that I should get organic / holistic food for my dog. Following this, she recommended Wellness to me. I made a comparison of the ingredients used in Science Diet and Wellness. The choice was clear to me. I chose Wellness for my pup. After this incident, I also did more research online and read more negative reviews on Science Diet, which made me feel very relieved that I did not buy it for my pup. At the same time, I also got to know of other recommended organic / holistic brands like Origen, Innova,Solid Gold, which I would consider for my puppy in future. I am so thankful to this kind lady who stopped me from making a wrong decision. As for my two friends whose dogs had been on Science Diet for a long time, I am trying to find a way to convince them to switch to another brand with healthier ingredients.

I think so many vets recommend Hill's Science Diet and similar foods because when they were in veterinary college, those nutrition classes were sponsored by those companies! They are brainwashed to believe Science Diet, Iams, etc. are the only good foods out there. Most of these vets are not even qualified nutritionists! Also, keep in mind that veterinary medicine is a business, and like all businesses, it makes sense to keep your customers coming back. Sad to say it, but it pays to keep your pet sick! Even if a vet knows that Science Diet may not be the best food, it is not in their best interest to tell you. I'm not saying all vets are like this, but it's just something to contemplate when you're searching for a brand of dog or cat food.
