Mobility for 21st Century Seniors
One outcome of our ever-increasing elderly population is strong growth in the mobility scooter market. This trend is actually expected to double as baby boomers are getting older as well. And let me tell you, these seniors are not satisfied with staying home! They are independent-minded and accustomed to taking care of themselves.
Today's mobility scooters make it easier than ever for seniors to get around. No longer confined to the house, many seniors want to keep enjoying the freedom of mobility even if they are living with a condition that limits their ability to walk around.
Online venues like the Scooter Store provide a wide assortment of scooters for the mobility impaired, as well as offer valuable free services such as consultations for caregivers, children of aged parents, and seniors.
The good news is that there are many public services that offer access for the mobility impaired, as well as scores of private businesses. Automatic doors are also more common than ever, so seniors can easily do their daily tasks without a hassle.
These practical scooters are generally powered electrically and designed to be ridden on smooth surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and other public walkways.
But don't worry, there are actually some four-wheel scooters on the market, too, which have even greater mobility, such as unpaved roads and grassy lawns.
There's no Stopping Today's Seniors!
Plenty of Options for Today's Seniors
Mobility scooters provide not only transportation that is safe and economical, but also convenient due to the high variability of options and scooter accessories such as baskets and carrying cases. The scooters are easy to control and turn on a dime. For seniors who have trouble with their manual wheelchairs, mobility scooters make it easy to get around.
Scooters come today in a variety of forms: some are three or even four wheel carts, or have light off-road capabilities (such as motoring through the grass and up hills). There are carts with luggage racks for groceries, and all kinds of accessories to make the scooter more comfortable and useful. For instance, seniors can add lights, baskets and saddle bags, and some scooters can even be tricked out with mag wheels!
With so many options now available, seniors are finding that they can still have a socially rewarding lifestyle despite being mobility impaired. Don't be surprised to see "Senior Mud-Bogging" competitions in the next few years!
On a personal note, my aunt just started using a mobility scooter for helping her get around. She's diabetic and it's difficult for her to even check the mail. I was delighted to see her tool down the driveway last week and pick up the mail without a worry. I admit I was surprised to see how much her life has changed because of the new mobility scooter she got at the Scooter Store. There's a lot of variety out there to choose from, so I encourage seniors to check out what's right for them. I hope this hub has convinced some that they don't have to sit around the house anymore - there's a whole world out there!
