Choosing a Screwdriver Set
67Screwdriver Set
A small toolkit including a screwdriver set is a necessity for most home owners or apartment dwellers. You can assemble your kit affordably, and will be able to fix many small problems that you might otherwise need to call a repair person. You can search online for a screwdriver set that meets your needs.
You can buy a screwdriver set in all kinds of forms online. Some sets are small and contain only the basics like a flat head screwdriver and a philips screw driver. Others have hundreds of pieces in all different sizes and should be able to handle virtually any job involving a screw!
If you are short on space, you can look for a screwdriver set which has one screwdriver handle that can hold a variety of bits. The bits themselves don't take up much space, and 10 or 15 different screwdriver bits should handle most household maintenance tasks. To use this type of screwdriver, you'll match the bit with your screw to find the most appropriate one, and then put the bit in the screwdriver handle. Some hands are magnetic or spring-loaded in order to keep the bit securely inside while you are using it. When you are finished putting in the screw, don't forget to put the bit back with your screwdriver set since they are tiny and so easy to lose around the house!
You can also find screwdriver sets with electric screwdrivers. These are more expensive but may be helpful if you anticipate doing a lot of maintenance, or if you are starting an extensive project involving many screws such as making a deck or putting together a wooden garden shed. Some electric screwdriver sets need to be plugged into the household current to work, while others have a battery which must be charged beforehand, but afterwards you can use the screwdriver cordlessly around the house or apartment. However, if you only need to drive a screw here or there, an electric one may be more than you need and will also take up a bit more space in your house.
It's important to match the screw you are trying to drive with the appropriate bit in your screwdriver set. Using the wrong bit may cause you to "strip" the screw which means to damage that shapes that allow you to put it in or out. In the worst case, a badly stripped screw may be virtually impossible to remove. You can avoid this problem by using the correct bit with any screw that you encounter. If you have a screw with a new type of head for which you don't have a bit such as a square head screw or star head screw, it's worth buying the correct bit so that you don't risk stripping the screw and not being able to remove it.
