Orca's,....Powerfully, Gentle
The Killer Whale also known as Orca's is by far the most beautiful mammal on this planet. They hold so much physical power, but yet they are more gentle than most dog's. The Killer Whale is the largest species of the dolphin family and can be found in all the oceans. They mainly feed on fish, however they do eat bigger things such as, seals, walruses, sea lions and can you believe in some incidences they have been known to hunt sharks and other large whales. Killer Whales are very sophisticated, living in a social world, and with their mastered vocal behavior along with their maternal ancestor history they are considered to be a culture. Imagine that !!! The males can reach a length of 19 to 26 feet long and weigh around 6 tons, while the females are smaller, averging about 16 - 23 feet long and only 3 -4 tons. I would also like to mention the males dorsal fin is a whopping 6 foot tall !!! What's really neat about their dorsal fin's is that each one has it's own "finger prints" so to speak, because of all the variety of scratches, marks and scars. In fact researchers have compiled photo's into catalogues and have been able to name them and show the family history.
Because Killer Whale's are so intelligent their train-ability is fairly easy and playful manner and striking feature's make them a popular exhibit at aquariums and aquatic theme parks.
History,....
Four graduates of UCLA, Milton C. Shedd, David Demott, George Millay and Ken Norris had planned on building a underground restaurant with a marine life show. When they realized how unfeasible the restaurant idea was, they decided to simply build a park instead. March 21,1964 with only a few dolphins and sea lions, on 22 acres and 6 attractions SeaWorld San Diego was born. Later they captured a few more species including a Orca and opened a new location in Aurora, Ohio. The Ohio site was very difficult to maintain due to it's cold winter's. In 1973 SeaWorld Orlanda had opened and later was referred to "the theme park mecca of the world". (HBR) Harcourt Brace Jovanovich purchased the company in 1976 and headed for Texas and just outside of San Antonia in 1988 another SeaWorld was opened. Due to stress and financial resources it took to maintain the parks, HBR decided to sell instead of facing bankruptcy. Anheuser-Busch bought all the parks in 1989.
Locations,.....
Everybody goes to SeaWorld with much anticapation to see the Killer Wkale's, however it also provide's a lot of fun exstra's. Currently SeaWorld houses 20 Orca's with in it's three parks and they live in 7 million-gallon habitats they call Shamu Stadium. Shamu is the official mascott, for he was the first to be brought to SeaWorld San Diego back in 60's. All these Orca's have their own name, however they take on the stage name, Shamu when performing.
