Orca's,....Powerfully, Gentle

The Killer Whale also known as Orca's is by far the most beautiful mammal on this planet. They hold so much physical power, but yet they are more gentle than most dog's. The Killer Whale is the largest species of the dolphin family and can be found in all the oceans. They mainly feed on fish, however they do eat bigger things such as, seals, walruses, sea lions and can you believe in some incidences they have been known to hunt sharks and other large whales. Killer Whales are very sophisticated, living in a social world, and with their mastered vocal behavior along with their maternal ancestor history they are considered to be a culture. Imagine that !!! The males can reach a length of 19 to 26 feet long and weigh around 6 tons, while the females are smaller, averging about 16 - 23 feet long and only 3 -4 tons. I would also like to mention the males dorsal fin is a whopping 6 foot tall !!! What's really neat about their dorsal fin's is that each one has it's own "finger prints" so to speak, because of all the variety of scratches, marks and scars. In fact researchers have compiled photo's into catalogues and have been able to name them and show the family history.

Because Killer Whale's are so intelligent their train-ability is fairly easy and playful manner and striking feature's make them a popular exhibit at aquariums and aquatic theme parks.

History,....

Four graduates of UCLA, Milton C. Shedd, David Demott, George Millay and Ken Norris had planned on building a underground restaurant with a marine life show. When they realized how unfeasible the restaurant idea was, they decided to simply build a park instead. March 21,1964 with only a few dolphins and sea lions, on 22 acres and 6 attractions SeaWorld San Diego was born. Later they captured a few more species including a Orca and opened a new location in Aurora, Ohio. The Ohio site was very difficult to maintain due to it's cold winter's. In 1973 SeaWorld Orlanda had opened and later was referred to "the theme park mecca of the world". (HBR) Harcourt Brace Jovanovich purchased the company in 1976 and headed for Texas and just outside of San Antonia in 1988 another SeaWorld was opened. Due to stress and financial resources it took to maintain the parks, HBR decided to sell instead of facing bankruptcy. Anheuser-Busch bought all the parks in 1989.

Locations,.....

Everybody goes to SeaWorld with much anticapation to see the Killer Wkale's, however it also provide's a lot of fun exstra's. Currently SeaWorld houses 20 Orca's with in it's three parks and they live in 7 million-gallon habitats they call Shamu Stadium. Shamu is the official mascott, for he was the first to be brought to SeaWorld San Diego back in 60's. All these Orca's have their own name, however they take on the stage name, Shamu when performing.

Seaworld San Diego

Seaworld San Diego is where it all started.  It took 1.5 million dollars, 22 acres,  45 employee's and some dolphins and sea lion's it welcomed more than 400,000 visitors the first year. It has many attractions besides the great shamu shows such as, the Journey to Atlantis, Dolphin Interaction Program takes place at the Rocky Point Preserve. It has over 300 penguins in it's exhibit, and they also have 2 pilot whale's named Bubbles and 9Lives. You can ride a 320 foot high Sky Tower and get an Awesome view of the park, or flow through a live turtle exhibit on the Shipwreck Rapids.

SeaWorld Orlando

This park is a little different from the rest it is not divided up like the others however it has areas within it, such as, Key West, where you'll find the sea turtles, stingrays, manatees, alligators and the dolphins. Other area's include, the Shamu's Happy Harbor a kid's place to play with rides and The Waterfront  resembles a seaside Mediterranean village and contains shops and restaurants. For beer and horse lovers you can visit the Clydesdale Hamlet where you can visit the stables and see the Clydesdale horses and get a lesson on how they make their beer. It has the thrill rides and animal exhibits, including a underwater tunnel for a shark encounter and get close and personal with the dolphins for a hands on experience. They have the Polar Bear Express and other fantastic shows.

SeaWorld San Antonio

SeaWorld San Antonio is the largest of the three parks. It is 250-acres and is located in the Westover Hills area of San Antonio, Texas. The park was built with 170 million dollars and opened in 1988, with in the first year it had over 3 million visitor's. It has thrill rides, such as the Steel Eel, the first and only hypercoaster in Texas, this bad boy reaches speed close to 70mph. Children rides, Shamu Express - a family roller coaster themed to the park's signature killer whale. The killer whale-themed cars zip along 67 miles of track at 14 mph. Shows and exhibits, Believe is a new show that is visibly stunning, filled with Orca's, acrobatics and live underwater video projection. Dolphin Cove has the popular bottlenose dolphins and staff on hand to educate, guests can interact with the dolphins and feed fish to the animals.
