Seahawks Season in Jeopardy
41
The window of opportunity to win yet another NFC West title for the Seahawks is quickly closing. Sundays second home loss of the season was just another reminder that the team is a shadow of the dominant home team they once were. They have shown the inability to run the ball, make big plays in the passing game, and the defense has yet to step up and make plays to get themselves off the field.
Sunday they threw Charlie Frye to the wolves in starting him, and he was flat out not very good against a Packers defense that came into the game struggling. Instead of being able to take advantage of the home crowd and playing a good game and showing the coaches his improvement as a possible QB of the future, Frye stunk up Qwest Field.
Let's remember why the Browns were willing to trade Frye to the Hawks last season after just one game. He wasn't very good there, and he won't be very good here. Matt Hasselbeck is really the MVP of this team, and losing him is maybe the one player that the team cannot afford to lose. That was proven more than ever on Sunday.
Now what can the team do, knowing that Hasselbeck will miss another game this week at Tampa Bay? They had better get creative, and put together a game plan that involves running, running, and more running. The less the ball is in the air vs the good Bucs D - the better. We'll see if the coaches follow that advice, or again force Frye to put the ball up more than 15-20 times.
That also puts the pressure on the defense to keep the Hawks in the game. They have not been very good, and it shows in the teams 1-4 record five games into the season. A loss, a bad loss Sunday night, and this team could be on the verge of start talking about 2009.
"My message to the team when I called them together is one that they have heard before from me, but it is very important that they hear me now: It is a test of sorts," Holmgren said. "We are not used to this. It's been a long time. But here we are. So how do we deal with it, as players and coaches? It is very, very important that they answer that question."
Now we'll see if the team takes those words to heart.
