The Jets are F/A-18s and with speeds just under Mach 2, almost twice the speed of sound or about 1,400 MPH, you can just imagine the tremendous scream of the engines and vibration as they fly by the area, particularly if you are out on the log boom. Those fortunate few who navigate out to the middle of the Sound and tie up to the log boom are at the center of it all.
It just doesn't get any better than being tied to the log boom to watch the hydroplanes and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. they fly right over your head. Even with the price of admission, the log boom is sold out.
Speaking from first hand, though not this year, it is a dizzying experience. You literally feel an electric charge from the fly-bys. I had to brace myself from falling, since I kept twisting straining my neck to see the maneuvers. It's a show you never want to end.
If you've never had the opportunity to watch the Blue Angels, there's still time if you live in the area, or via satellite TV.
Safety
I think boaters are finally getting the message on safety. My compliments to law enforcement and the media. This year, even stronger than last year the word is out--be safe. Zero for boating under the influence and strap on the life jackets.
I was pleased to see a new initiative this year. Law enforcement was out rewarding boaters who exhibited safe boating habits. They were giving our gas cards to families wearing their life jackets. I'd say this is above and beyond the call, but if it saves one life, then it is worth it.
