Second Thoughts About A New Job? Even Katie Couric Has Them
62Couric Has One Advantage Over The Rest of the Workforce - MONEY
Everyone I know has had at one time or another, second thoughts about a new job. Most of the time, it is just a matter of settling into a new atmosphere, new faces, new bosses and determining what the office drama will be.
While it may take different people longer or shorter periods of time to acclomate themselves to a new workplace, most everyone just resigns themselves to the fact that it gets some getting used to.
What about those who have worked in a wide variety of workforces? From the Mom and Pop operations all the way up to a huge international conglomerate of Corporate America. If you notice that they are having trouble adapting to the workplace, to me that signals bells, whistles and alarms. Run, do not walk to the nearest unemployment line.
But as the average worker will tell you, it's not always that easy. Why? what is the reason nearly all Americans work? To pay bills, groceries, to own a home or pay for an apartment, to have a car and so on. Not to mention, have you had to live on an unemployment check lately? Oy Vei! The government has GOT To be kidding me, right? It might cover rent, but nothing else (if that).
So, that would be Food, Shelter and Transportation. With maybe a little bit of entertainment on the side. Those are the essentials of our lives and they aren't free. That is why most workers endure hostile work environments, crappy bosses, two-faced co-workers and the impossible deadlines of the work itself.
In exchange, we recieve compensation, insurance, retirement plans and possibly even a pension although those are few and far between. The exchange of compensation in various forms for enduring the workplace is a staple in American culture. Songs have been written about it, Books have been written and Psychiatrists have seen a surge in their services among the Corporate folk. You think I am kidding, don't you? I can't tell you how many times my former co-workers confided to me that they were seeing someone about the boss. Why do you think companies offer mental health benefits? Because it is put to good use, at least by the employees I worked with.
That's why when Katie Couric voiced her doubts about her new anchor job, the bloggers were blogging about it before she finished her first sentence. I say it's not that unusual, even the high profile workers deal with it. But, I have to be honest, I'm not real sympathetic toward Katie. I don't dislike her, she seems to be a nice lady and does a competant job of anchoring the news desk. I just like Charlie better. And, that's probably all there is to it as far as her ratings go.
The only catch is, if Katie Couric is really unhappy, she could quit tomorrow and take a few years off without even batting an eye. She is bankrolled to the inth degree and is in a powerful spot in spite of her vulnerability regarding her tenure at CBS.
My advice to Katie? "It probably wasn't the best move, but you live and learn. If you're that unhappy, go to a tropical island in Aruba and work on your tan for the next few years while you drown your sorrows in a pina coloda."
