How To Heat Seal Ribbon

As a former online ribbon retailer who still enjoys crafting, one of the most frequently asked questions I receive is "How can I heat seal my ribbon?"

I'm always pleased to reply that it is a very simple process and there is really no big secret to the process. Plus, heat sealing ribbon leaves a much more professional appearances to bows and other ribbon projects than using Fray Check (although it is a great option for beginner bowmakers).

To heat seal your ribbon, you will need one of the following items:

  1. Woodburner: Just simply place the end of your ribbon to the tool's tip. You won't need to leave it very long; a quick second will do the job.
  2. Candle: With the candle setting stable on a tabletop or similar flat surface, hold the ribbon as close to the end you wish to seal and as tightly as possible. Quickly move the ribbon end through the flame in a left to right motion (or vice versa if you prefer). One pass through the flame will typically seal the ribbon, but repeated if needed.
  3. Lighter: Using a cigarette or candle lighter, just press the button and in a swiping motion run it across the end of your ribbon. Like the candle, one pass will typically seal the ribbon, but do repeat if necessary.

However, as a word of precaution, this method is more likely to "flame up" the side seams of the ribbon so be sure to use caution when using the lighter method.

It's that simple! And I'm sure you'll find this method much neater than using those messy Fray Check sealers.

I always use clear nail varnish - obviously not heat sealed!

But next time I will try the candle trick.
