Security Gates

The security of your property is more important now than ever before, and a security gate at the entrance to your home or business is one of the most effective ways of establishing this. There are different reasons for installing a security gate, and there are therefore different kinds of gates available. For example, wrought-iron gate in front of the door to your home allows you to open your door to a visitor or for fresh air while maintaining a barrier between you and the outside world. This is a good way to keep your home safe in an unassuming way that doesn’t impose on the style of your home too greatly. However, you would not want to install that kind of security gate in the doorway of your shop, because when your store is open the door is open to the public, and when it is closed you probably need a higher security measure than a simple gate over the door. In fact, a gate of this kind in front of your business may be a deterrent to customers who are looking for an inviting storefront rather than a fortified one. For a business solution, you probably want a gate that can secure the whole storefront when the business is closed, and virtually disappear during open hours. Folding security gates or roll-down gates are ideal for applications such as this.
Already it is becoming clear that a security gate solution must be specific to the function it will serve, which requires some foresight. A security gate can be commanding and impenetrable or attractive and intriguing. Driveway security gates deliver a distinct message about the occupants of the house, and a side gate to a yard sends a much different one. Do you want your security gate to have a presence, actively deterring thoughts of trespassing, or do you want it to be functional and subtle, serving its purpose without being an eyesore to passers-by and, more importantly, the members of your household who will live with it?
Generally, home security gates are made of metal, for obvious reasons. Metal provides strength, durability, and security at an affordable price. However, if your gate is more directed at keeping things within it than keeping the world out, such as your pets, children, or privacy, you may want a solid wooden gate, with spring hinges and self-locking latches. While it is not the most secure of gates, it is undoubtedly appropriate for certain needs. On the other hand, a driveway security gate raises different questions: since it will probably be frequently used, durability becomes a central issue. Triple hinges are helpful here, as well as a good locking/unlocking mechanism, or even a remote open system. The design of your driveway gates is also important: do you want your gate to welcome guests, or make it clear that your property is private? Security cameras and intercom systems are also warrant attention as options. When shopping for metal gates, wrought iron is a good strong yet decorative solution for the home, but it requires some upkeep. Stainless steel or aluminum are good low-maintenance options, and copper or brass are strong and handsome choices if you have a large budget.
One of the most important gates in suburban homes is among the most inconspicuous: the garage gate. It transforms the whole space around it from open to closed, and provides tremendous security to the home when closed and locked. An open garage door can facilitate a gathering, a spacious workshop, band practice or a welcoming garage sale, where a close one delivers a clear message: keep out. It is very important to your garage door closed and locked whenever you are not around: according to police statistics, 40% of non-forced entry crime in residential areas occurs through open garage doors.
One important piece of buying advice for choosing security gates is never to settle for a prefabricated or ‘cookie-cutter’ solution to your specific security endeavor. Make sure that your security gate option is just right for your home or business, and try to anticipate the way it will be used. Do you want to invite or repel visitors? Do you want to be part of the community or isolated from it? A gate is often the first impression one has of a place: it is a barrier between the private and public worlds. It can be strongly symbolic, or purely functional and anywhere in between.
