The security gate can be a great addition to any home's security system. But the term security gate can mean a couple different objects. With very few limitations on design, there are security gates that block off the drive to your house if you are lucky enough to have them, but also security gates small enough to be put in a doorway. What all security gates have in common is that they are meant to protect an area from outside threats, weather that threat be a burglar or your pet's dirty paws. Security gates can also be one of the best child care and safety tools around. The purchase of a security gate of any kind can be one of the best investments you ever made.

What are Security Gates?

A security gate is any structure that can be placed within a path or opening, and effectively block off what lies beyond. This is a very general description however, because technically a large wooden box could then be called a security gate if placed in a doorway. In general, most security gates resemble either doors made out of metal bars or fencing, or an expandable latticework supported on a rigid frame. Both types of security fences can be opened and closed to allow access to and from the protected area.

Types of Security Gates

Modern security gates serve two main purposes, either blocking off a doorway inside, or leading to the inside of a building, or blocking a driveway or small street. As you can imagine, these two kinds of security fence differ in more than just their size. Each type has their own specific, and sometimes vital role in home or business security.

  • Home security gates are usually the smaller of the two main kinds of security gate, and are also the most often purchased by the average citizen. These gates feature a expandable latticework supported on a rigid frame that when pulled can expand to fit perfectly into a door or hallway. They can also operate much like a small door. Many people use these security gates as a way to prevent their children or pets from getting to dangerous areas of the house. There are however much larger versions used by many businesses to cover doorways, stairways, and even block off entire hallways.
  • The second variety of security gate is the large driveway or road gate. These gates often resemble opening or sliding fences in professional models, or are more decorative when used for private residences. Many drive gates installed into private homes are often more decorative than functional. Professional versions however are often made out of reinforced metals and concrete, and can withstand forces as strong as SUV's running directly into them.

Purchasing and Using a Home or Pet Security Gate

There are many great uses for security gates both in and around the house. Home security gates can keep young ones and pets safe and sound in a given room or part of the house, leaving you free to do chores or what have you. This doesn't mean they leave you free from watching your loved ones and pets, far from it, but at least they increase your "breathing room" quite a bit. Here are some tips on choosing and using home security gates:

  • Make sure to measure the door or hallway you wish to close off before purchasing your home security gate. Bringing home the wrong size gate can obviously lead to problem, weather or not the gate is too big or too small.
  • If you mean to buy a security gate to help safeguard your child, there are many specialty baby security gates available. These specialty security gates often have many added safety features to not only contain your child, but also protect them from the gate itself.
  • A pet security gate will act in much the same way as the baby security gate, but are usually larger and offer less safety features. People often use pet security gates as temporary barriers when company comes over or when cleaning to keep the animals from being a nuisance. Just make sure you don't leave your dog toys or cat toys on the other side when closing off an area.
