Seeking Christian Credit Debt Counseling
54Some people may feel
more comfortable seeking Christian debt counseling rather than secular debt
counseling. There are a number of these services, many of whom have websites.
Their claim is that they provide biblical Christian debt counseling for
families, including budget analysis, payment options, debt consolidation,
bankruptcy, and personal loans, and they say they do it in a non-judgmental
way. Most do not file bankruptcies or issue loans.
The underlying belief of many of these Christian credit counseling firms is
that God doesn't want you to have debt. Their fundamental thesis is that
financial difficulties are symptoms of spiritual problems, and the answer is to
pray and search out spiritual solutions to financial problems. One company
claims that the Bible contains over 2,300 verses that contain very practical
ways to deal with money (including tithing).
Some firms will set up payment plans or rate reductions with various creditors.
You then send the Christian debt counseling service a check every month from
which they will pay your bills. A Christian debt counseling service called
Christian Financial Ministries (CFM) promises to "pray harder for you and
work more with you than you expect" to teach you to use biblical financial
principles and biblical budget advice to fix your finances both long term and
short term. CFM says that you will receive "personalized prayerful
attention" to help you get rid of debt and pass along all the wealth
you'll end up with. Apparently, God has used this type of counseling to fund
their ministry services in the past.
So if you believe your debt problem is due to the wrong spiritual practices or
if you don't trust non-Christian credit counselors, then looking into Christian
debt counseling could be a good choice. Be prepared to have a close and
personal relationship not only with God but with your Christian debt counselor
team as well.
