An interesting way to get around, the Segway scooter is a two wheeled vehicle that is self balanced. It uses an electric powered motor to move around and a computer to keep it balanced. They are known as being an expensive toy and rightly so as the Segway price can be quite high for what you get.

The Segway has a very simple control system. You lean forward to go that direction and lean backwards to go back. Left and right is handled by a similar fashion with the "lean and steer" handlebar. Segway scooters can only reach speeds of about 12-13 mph so they are by no means a fast form of transportation.

The only areas where they are widely used is at places with small to medium distances to travel that would be inconvenient to walk to or just faster to travel to with a scooter. Examples would be police departments, military bases, warehouses, corporate campuses or industrial sites.Other than those, there really aren't that many other places where they are reasonable to use. In fact in several states they have been banned from sidewalks.

Types Of Segways

There are several different models of Segway scooters that have been made since they started production in 2002. The i2, XT, i180, i170, p133, e167, i167, and x2 are all popular models. The i-series of Segways are the fastest which are capable of the maxium speed of 12-13 mph. It can travel 25-30 miles on a single charge. Compared to only 8-10 miles with the p-series of Segways. Most of the other models are just subtle varations on the series model.

Just recently, a new model for police and saftey officers was released with special modifications for their needs. It features a bright reflective surface and room to hold a small amount of cargo. They are also more durable than the other models. This patroller model Segway is apparently based straight from suggestions from police stations where they are already in use.

Price Of Segway Scooters

The price of individual Segways will vary depending on what features you want and which model you choose. For a brand new Segway scooter you can expect to pay in the range of $5,350 to over $6,900. Also which dealership you visit can affect the Segway pricing.

In other countries it will also vary. For example in the UK an average Segway is £4,399 to £4,599, in France €6400 and €7200, and in Switzerland 10'000 Swiss Francs.

If you can't afford a Segway, you could always just rent one. Segway scooters are available in many different places including some dealerships. Usually you have to put down a deposit to ride one. Prices for rental of a Segway vary but in general you can expect to pay about $100 a day. Some places also have per hour rentals. Those average about $20-30 an hour.

So if you're looking to buy a Segway, hopefully you have a good amount of spending money because they don't come cheap. A Segway scooter will cost you more than a 50cc scooter that would get you where ever you wanted to go including on the streets at a reasonable speed. But if you need it for other reasons or can't drive a scooter where you need to go I supposed a Segway is a good choice.
