Selenium is a very potent antioxidant as well as a component of several other essential enzymes. Selenium health benefits include the delay or possibly even prevent cancer besides being an effective anti-aging agent. Selenium is also a valuable mineral, which is significant to the proper functioning of the thyroid as well as helping to improve the immune system.

Selenium can be found in various places and food products such as in the soil and in the water. Basically, the selenium content of your food largely depends on how rich the soil, where the food was planted, was in selenium.

Selenium deficiency may happen in places where the soil contains very low selenium. This may significantly affect thyroid functions and can also be the cause for what is known as the Keshan disease. Selenium deficiency is also, often, seen in patients who are on TPN as well as those who have gastrointestinal disorders which also causes a decrease in the absorption of selenium eventually resulting in its depletion.

Recent studies have also tackled the possible role of selenium in preventing cancer. There were evidences coming from the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer or NPC which suggests that proper selenium supplementation can indeed reduce prostate cancer risks in men with a normal baseline level as well as low selenium blood levels. Do note, however, that this study has also shown that selenium was able to aid in the risk reduction of basal cell carcinoma of the skin as well as ling colorectal. Studies have also shown that it could potentially increase the risks of getting squamous cell skin carcinoma.

Selenium is also a key component of gluthathione peroxidase which is used as an antioxidant. Earlier, I have mentioned the Keshan disease. For those who are unfamiliar with it, Keshan disease is actually a type of heart disease which is common in China where people have low selenium levels. Other Selenium health benefits include improving asthma symptoms (although further research is needed), relief of intercranial pressure symptoms such as speech disorders, nausea, Jacksonian seizures, emesis and vertigo. There are also studies that show how selenium can be used on burn wounds to speed up healing.

Selenium is also known to help slow down the aging process. It increases the effectiveness of Vitamin E and acts as an antioxidant and protects the cells from free-radical damage which is the cause of aging. It’s a great mineral that cater to aging women beauty.
