Self-Actualization In Recovery
70Self-actualization is defined as the realization of a person's full potential without any rewards involved. According to Maslow, this can only be achieved when all other needs are met. I think that self-actualization can be met at a point during recovery... recovery from anything, drugs, eating disorder, alcohol abuse, depression, etc.Â
The twelve steps outline a way to recovery. Accepting the problem, admitting your faults, having your higher power remove those defaults of character, make amends to those whom you have wronged, and continue to live your life according to the twelve traditions. (This is a general outline.)Â
While walking through the twelve steps, it can be frustrating, incredibly difficult, and at times it feels downright impossible. But those who manage to work their way through the steps and end up working their way into a state of healthy recovery through the twelve steps often learn a lot about themselves and who they really are, what they can do. When people are in a depressed state, which they often are when using or doing some other destructive behavior, they lose sight of what their true potential is.Â
On my journey of recovery I believe I am getting closer and closer to self-actualization everyday. It is a difficult thing to do but when you embrace life instead of casting it aside or your destructive behaviors don't allow you to meet your more basic needs that Maslow talks about, you can't get to self-actualization.

Good journey. It seems you are well on your way.
I can't tell you how I enjoy reading your articles. It's plain, straightforward, and inspiring. I'm doing Psychology as well, and I think that the crucial element of surmounting any difficulties, as well as rehabilitation of any forms is the self-recognition, to accept what you really are, your own identity. Once you can do that, you are already on you're ready to start to retrieve to a better life.

Thanks for the kind comment dana825. My wife is a recovering alcoholic who went through 5 weeks of tough rehab. I am happy to say that she has been sober for almost 1 year and is even off all the medication that the doctors put her on. We can overcome all things through Him who strengthens us. Best wishes to you on your journey.
