Self Cleansing and Cyclic Properties of the Vagina
81
Most men and women would agree that the vagina is a wonderful part of the female anatomy, yet it is often sadly misunderstood.
The beautiful orifice welcomes not only the complimentary male organ of pleasure and procreation, but also the resulting new life that comes through it from the womb above. In the striking beauty of the vagina are also self cleansing and cyclic properties that are commonly referred to on the surface as "vaginal discharge".
Not only is the term "discharge" viewed as negative enough to warrant the production of fragrant pantyliners to "catch" the offending liquid, it is -at best- a misinformed determination of what happens in and through the vagina. Time for a bit of education or re-education for the masses.
Bad Name for Body Fluids
There is a great focus on body fluids containing potentially harmful bacteria or viruses and this is certainly true at times. Blood, semen, vaginal fluid, sweat, and tears have been given almost a 'bad name' because of this. In actuality, they all have a supreme purpose that is more prevalent than any negative association society has attached to them. Some people have a negative view of the vagina and what it produces for just these reasons!
However, the vagina itself is a host of extremely important fluids. This article is written to banish any idea that the vagina is anything less than sacred and pure, once you understand the way it works. And believe me, you will benefit from knowing just how it works.
Her magic cycle
The vagina is a naturally self-functioning body part that goes through delicate and sometimes not-so-delicate evolution month after month. A portion of that includes the self-cleansing and cyclic normalcies noted through the secretion of vaginal and cervical fluids. The fluid found in and leaving the vagina is part of its comprehensive life-giving structure.
The flow, consistency, color, scent, and purpose of the liquid changes throughout the monthly cycle of life, as does the vagina's tenacity for sex. Knowing what happens when allows you, man or woman, to make the most of the time and circumstances that you have.
Ripening
Let's start with the juicy part.
As a woman's ova begin to ripen in preparation for popping out of her ovary, her womb, cervix, and of course vagina all have their accompanying role. In the Universal magic of procreation, the womb prepares a bed for the fertilized ovum as it lines itself with blood rich tissue. The cervical opening of the womb begins to widen and actually point itself in a favorable angle to receive the blessed sperm. Equally important, the production of a slippery fluid begins.
When looked at under a microscope, the cervical fluid actually has dimensions of direction that allow the sperm to swim quickly to their destination. There is no doubt that a specific goal is in mind and that a woman's vagina is well positioned and lubricated for one reason: to assist the achieving of the goal.
During this phase a woman's vagina may produce various amounts of this fluid as it makes its way down and out in hopes of a further union with that of the opposite sex (or just plain slippery sex.) As shown in the photo, when placed between the fingertips the cervical fluid stretches and has a consistency much like an egg white.
Natural family planning methods such as the Creighton Model System (which I successfully used for 15 months) are based on this information. It ought to be taught to every person having sex on the planet for the purposes of not only planning, but enjoyment as well.
Descent
As the ovum makes its way along the fallopian tube into the uterus and disintegrates from lack of union with the perfect sperm (assuming it didn't take this time), the cervical fluid reduces. The vagina returns to its non-ripened phase of self cleansing with a healthy bacteria rich creamy fluid that is sometimes white or light yellowish tinted. The smell may be slightly sweet, vinegary, or even take on aspects of a food she ate since it is coming from her body.
Of course when the time comes, the lining of the uterus will begin its cleansing process as it removes and exits the cervical opening and down the vagina as well. This is the time where women may experience cramps and call it "the flow." The menstrual cycle is in full force. The release of fluid now can vary in color and odor anywhere from metallic to fresh blood, red, orange, or brown - or a color in between.
Abnormalities of the cycle and its properties manifest as pain, foul odor, and very heavy flow. Sexually transmitted diseases can also affect the female anatomy and its healthy functioning. Contact your health care provider if you are in question.
Vaginal Liberation
The vagina takes care of itself when left alone. Not that type of alone - I am talking about douches, fragrances and other "stuff" that is used to mask, spruce up, or other wise change the natural state of the vagina. It is a myth that women need any products to take care of their sacred love area and in truth, they can upset the delicate natural balance that exists. Self respect and confidence are all you need.
If you find yourself feeling shame,
guilt, or inhibition around sex or your body, seek assistance from
someone who can assist you in moving through that stuff so you can
appreciate yourself - sexuality included. You deserve to love yourself
and your experience in this body completely!
The important point to remember is that these cyclic properties all have their purpose and they are what brought you here. Whether you are thankful for your life or not, you may choose to simply be grateful for the female vagina's process and notice where you have misinformed biases against it (so you can liberate yourself and the women in your life from them, of course!)

Hi David! This is Rainbow's take on the fact that the vagina is simply not always held in the high regard that it ought to be. So, you know, I gave the RR version...
Yes, yes I'll get back to the typical RR hubs. No worries :o).
Although I may take a few detours to address sexual shame, etc. :o)
My ex-wife had a self destructive tendency and was always herself in one way or another. One was way douching every day to rid her body of any natural scent to replace it with flowery unnatural fragrance. The result was a nearly constant yeast infection caused by the ph changeds in the natural washing process. She would get mad at me when I would say that her natural smell (not unclean) was beautiful. She said I wanted her to stay dirty when I told her that she was not treating her vagina right. It was her body and she never did listen to me. Oh well, I tried. Thank you for the hub. I am a very appreciating married man.
Women are fed the idea from the media and others that using products is necessary to wash away whatever they perceive as dirty. The idea that a woman's body is less than sacred has been long standing (think back to burning of witches) and it's sad to see it play out this way. Kudos to you for schooling her on the truth of the matter and for respecting her wishes. It's likely she'll look back on it one day. It took a man with a similar nature for me personally to realize that the media was very *wrong*. Thanks for commenting.
OH my............. sometimes I hold my breath when I prepare myself to read either my son or daughters HUB page. Your title alone made me stop breathing. I didn't even give it a chance.. I just couldn't read it. I thought to myself, when is enough... Enough?
LOL! That's only because our society likes to keep this kind of stuff behind closed doors. Which is fine, but really - women and men ought to know...
OH MY GOD! I feel like I just peeked into someone's ubnderwear and found more than underwear! (!!!!!!) I couldn't help it! It was very interesting ... and very informative.
You guys (excuse the poor choice of words!) are an endless source of total fascination. Much better than studying bugs ... more like studying ... an alien species, from another planet. Very much like us - but oh so different.
All kidding aside: an exceedingly well-written and honest piece about typically difficult subject matter. Smarter than anything I EVER heard in Sex-Ed.
Five Stars!!!!! Gold ones!
Rainbow that was great! Lots of great information here. I hope I remember to bestow this wisdom on my daughter some day. I'm leaving your hub feeling lovely, healthy and well cleansed... naturally.
Obviously I am not in a position to know the current attitude towards womens health issues, but I was under the impression that this movement away from unnatural douches and various products you describe so well has been under way for several years. Do you find this true, but still see a trend in women to use these man-made products? Just curious, and I must say, I found your hub most interesting...on a subject which would normally make me "squirmy."
ur good
Constant - nice to be back in the saddle, as they say! ;o) I've been away for a while and this topic spurred me to relate a touchy subject with class. It was written as an educational piece for men and women and I'm glad you enjoyed it. We don't get this type of schooling in most cases and although I don't like to use this word - we *should*.
Patricia - I have more coming so stay tuned. I've been the recipient of a lot of sex education over the years and I want my daughters to know how wonderful they are because if I don't tell them they will soak up all of the remaining societal views, which are none less than horrible. Confidence and a complete respect for the body are what keep someone safe and in healthy relationships - it starts now.
Christoph - yes, you are correct. When I was a teen (15+ years ago) the movement was well under way... but the products are still available and there are still people who think they are helpful and have the same disgust for the body. Glad you enjoyed the hub :o)
badcompany - lovely, just what I intended!
renjumullor - also, thank you for the comment!
I have found that so many women (and even more men) dont understand this natural part of the female body. In my view its is no more "unsightly" or "dirty" than hands, arms, feet, eyes, ears, hair etc. It is only societal conditioning (mainly from oppresive patriarchal religious philosophies) over millenia that has put this part of the female body into a section marked "unclean". For instance, many women in tribal cultures are forced to live separately from the rest of their community during their menstrual cycle, and are treated with disdain. As a whole woman who celebrates her feminity, I find the whole idea of ignoring the vagina or deeming it a "dirty part" incomprehensible. Many phallic symbols are celebrated all over this planet in connection with fertility, yet few consider it to be "dirty" like the vagina. It is with great joy that I have encountered this hub, and celebrate the fact that someone is emotionally mature enough to write about this normal part of female biology with the intent on educating the masses on a part of the female body that neither females (nor many males!) can survive without! lol! great hub. And might I also add that if more women learned about and accepted their bodies and celebrated them, instead of being brainwashed by a male dominated media industry on what is allegedly attractive, then there would be a lot more happy women (and happy men) on this planet!
Very well written and an informative hub on one of the most touchy and sensitive topic. Keep up the good work
Lou - Amen and thank you! I agree whole heartedly. Almost all of us came through a vagina so we ought be thankful for them and revere them (along with our mothers, but that's a whole other topic!) There is not one part on the human body that isn't beautiful - it's what we have! Better to appreciate than to loathe or gravely misunderstand it.
Jay - Thank you, I aim to please!
Hi RainbowRecognizer
I think you have exposed the world to the last frontier! Haha Very informative. Thumbs up! ;)
That was the best article written about this subject. You handle the issue very well. I appreciated it being discussed in an upfront candid conversation. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us. Keep up the very important work
Thanks Lonely Hubber & Erich! The truth shall set us free.
Only one offensive photo. other than that clean article.
Very informative. I always wondered what was hiding down there, now I know.
Oh, Linda, I'd love to know which photo you found offensive?! Was it the topless woman? Because she exhibits the feminine beauty we all possess. Or was it the cervical fluid? If more people were familiar with it they could consciously create families, instead of doing it based purely on physiological urges, societal expectations and/or ignorance. Or was it the diagram of a woman's insides? That, of course, is sex education that I also feel each person deserves to know. Still, I'd love to know what you think! :o)
Thanks, Cindy ;o). LOL
Very very good hub. Why this type of information is not included in academic courses? All I came to conclusion, after reading your article, is that everything is done by nature autometically, including family planning if followed correct timming. Yes the evolution depends on private parts of the body but mistakenly misunderstood, misused most of the cases outside the wedlock.
Well !!! what a magic device.........PinkRoseBud
My wife thanks you. After reading this hub I'll give her at least a week off. Thanks for ruining my favorite ride at vaginaland. :)
I am happy to assist... ;o). It is amazing that much of the educational focus does not give this information. Conscious conception (and avoidance of) is a reality for those who are informed.
Ron - you have me laughing - still! Ruining your favorite ride?! This hub is designed to enhance, not ruin! Read it again with a shift in perspective... LOL
