1-2-3-4 of Self Defense Basics

Self defense is self preservation. In truth, the best defense is to prevent danger. Like they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

How does one prevent being mugged or attacked?

Let's take a look at some safety tips:

1. BE AWARE of YOUR SURROUNDINGS! - When you're alone, always walk in well-lighted and populated areas. The presence of a moderate number people deters many muggers and discourages people from robbing you, specially if the area is also well lit. Too many people though, like huge crowd, may encourage menaces like pick-pockets and purse snatchers. So always hold on to your personal belongings like your most prized possessions.

2. DO NOT OVER DECORATE YOUSELF in PUBLIC PLACES. - Fancy jewelry can invite undesirables. If you must wear some for an event you need to attend, make sure you are not on public transportation alone or walking to the venue. If you can, put all the fancy stuff in your purse and wear it all when you get to the party,

3. GIVE it UP if YOU HAVE TO. - In case you get held up and all the person wants is your purse or your jewelry, give it up if a gun or knife is involved. You want to avoid getting hurt before anything else.

4. KNOW WHAT and WHERE to HIT! - If anyone tries to attack you violently, hit the person in the most sensitive parts: groin, eyes, nose & shin. As soon as the person is incapacitated, RUN as fast as you can while calling for help.

Take a self-defense class and learn the basics of practical self defense to develop the skills and confidence you need to defend yourself.
