Self Defense Tactics
64Defending Yourself
If you take martial arts for self defense, you will know
that it is better to walk away from a fight than to engage in one when you
don’t have to. However, most men think that once someone confronts them for a
fight, they have to prove their manhood.
In some cases, this will land you in the morgue. It is best
to leave the scene if you can whether you have to run or walk. Ok, you are
probably saying that people will call you “chicken.” So what? It is better to
be a live chicken than a dead one.
With martial arts defense, you should have learned that it
is best to stay professional at all times and not let the attacker see that you
are nervous. Staying focused will allow you to make better decisions. It is not
force that wins a fight, but it is technique or the ability to walk away. You
are a bigger man or woman if you do.
Some fall into the category of feeling invincible especially
if they have been practicing martial arts for a long time. Training in Dojos
and martial arts school has gotten too commercialized that all the instructor
is interested in is to keep your membership.
Rising through the ranks of martial arts is what every
individual strives for, but that won’t give you all you need for a self defense
confrontation because most martial arts schools have become black belt
factories and given credit when it is not yet earned.
Those schools will offer training that can be complicated
and confusing. When you do get into a situation to fight for your life, you may
not even remember half of what you have learned because you don’t know how to
apply it to real life situations.
Instead of preparing you for a fight, they are only feeding
your ego and giving you false confidence. You may have a black belt and still
may not be able to fight on the streets.
If you don’t know the exact steps to follow when you are in
a fight, you will make mistakes and lose the fight and in the process you will
get hurt.
It is just not enough to know the latest takedowns, kicks
and strikes. You have to know how and when to apply them so that they are
effective.
Your martial arts class will give you many moves, but if you
don’t have a game plan on how to deal with someone who is approaching you
threateningly, then there is no use for those moves now, is there?
Without a plan of what to do in a confrontation, you will
definitely freeze up and fear will overtake you. You have to be mentally ready
to face your opponent or you will be defeated quickly.
You don’t want to leave the scene of a fight with any
bruises or broken bones, so be prepared at all times and listen to your
instinct. Your life depends on it.

Very pertinent points of view. I agree with them. I have been in the martial arts world since a long time and I am more and more disappointed.

Short, sweet and to the point. I was especially interested to see you make a distinction from tournament teachers and self defense teachers. You're right, there's a vast difference between the two. Let me be the first to welcome you here and I look forward to what you have in store for us in the future.
