Finding Your Routes to Self Improvement

The subject of self improvement is one of infinite variety. Every person is individual; every individual has thousands of facets to their lives that could be improved in some way. So diverse is the idea of "improvement" that what to one person is an improvement in their lives, to another is like dropping down a lift shaft.

In reality, self improvement is beyond a short definition; it is something you can rewrite every second of your life. There is always something beyond what you are doing or achieving. Whatever your background or current situation, improvement is something that is dangled like a tempting carrot before all of us, whether the owner or CEO of a giant corporation or a malnourished child in a poverty stricken slum in Africa or any poor country or neighbourhoods of the world.

Your own current situation, in every aspect of your life, is your baseline from which you will seek to "improve". Your own personal self improvement aims will probably be related to particular elements of that baseline. Those elements may be to do with health, sporting achievement, money, power, influence, knowledge, skills, responsibility, business success, freedom or many other constituents of life. You may feel the need to improve in one or a mix of those aspects of your life.

The self improvement industry is high end. It is mostly about career, business, expensive courses, high brow books and seminars, and highly paid motivational speakers. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is just a tip of the massive iceburg of life that is the constant thrust for improvement that exists in just about every home in the world, from a high rise apartment in Manhattan, to a flimsy nipa hut on the edge of a Philippine jungle.

Self improvement is humanity's driving force, not the exclusive preserve of a select few.

Common Elements of Self Improvement - Motivation

Although there is a massive diversity in self improvement, there are some elements that form a common thread in most, if not all, desire to improve oneself. Your success or failure will almost certainly depend to an extent on the first of them: motivation. The others I will mention briefly in this Hub are focus and the ability to overcome setbacks.

Whatever the part of your self you have chosen to improve, your level of motivation will be a crucial part. If you have no motivation to be successful in whatever it is you want to achieve, then there is a likelihood you will attract failure. That can apply to just about every part of your life, from health to career, from athletic performance to learning how to make money online.

Let is take health as an example. You have probably read of true stories of people surviving illness or injury when doctors would normally have expected them to die. In such cases, a common thread is the determination of these individuals to carry on living, simply not accepting that their life is about to be cut short. These people have the ultimate motivation, to survive as a living being. Others, though, in the same condition, amy just accept tamely that their life is ebbing away, and so it does.

That is a grim and extreme example, but there are countless examples of where motivation can significantly affect the course of your life. More on this later.

Other Hubs will follow on the topic of self development and improvement.

We all have to be accountable for our own success. There's no use blaming circumstances or others. Stand up and be counted. Motivation can be helped by getting out and taking a walk... this in turn helps us feel better about ourselves and we feel energized. Enjoy each and every moment and the little pleasure in life... can mean so much.

Self improvement is a continual process.... read books, listen to CD's or go to seminars or take a course. Courses are great places to meet other like minded people to inspire you.
