When wanting to sell a house, the traditional approach if you don't have a friend who happens to want to buy at the time, is to go to an Estate Agent. The Agent will market your property through his office, you'll have to wait around for a few months. They will then arrange people to see it at a time that may not be convenient to you, you'll want to rearrange and have to go via them in order to do so. They then contact the prospective buyers who may or may not now be able to make the new time. Eventually they see the house, and inevitably the first people hardly ever buy so you repeat the process.

After months of going back and forth, eventually a buyer is interested and you then are reliant on the Estate Agent getting his act into gear and making things happen at the right pace so that things don't fall through. If they do, you're back at stage one.

Eventually when you sell, you pay the agent a significant amount of money, and you are probably relived that the whole ordeal is over.
