Whereas Syntax studies the form of signs (words) and sentences, Semantics focuses on the real meaning of signs (words) and sentences or the relation between a sign and its object.

Most theorists refer to the relation between a sign and its objects as its denotation. Some theorists refer to the relation between a sign and the signs that serve in its practical interpretation as its connotation, but there are many more differences of opinion and distinctions of theory that are made in this case.

Free: Gratis vs Libre

Let's take the term free: free could mean something like "free as free beer" (gratis) or something like "free speech" (libre).

Gratis may be slowly becoming more common in the English language. However, libre has not, and no English adjective signifies freedom only. This distinction is often important in dealing with laws concerning the use of information, such as copyright and patents. The terms are often used in the free software and open source communities, as well as the broader free culture movement.
