Scripture Study Helps in the LDS Edition of the New Testament

Chapter Headings and Section Introductions: The headings and section introductions help us understand what is happening in these chapters and sections. For example, you can read the chapter heading for Matthew 17 and see who accompanied Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration. The heading for John 1 tells us who created all things. The heading for Acts 7 tells us who Moses reminds us of. The heading for Galatians 3 tells us why the Mosaic law was given to the children of Israel.

Italicized Words: Italicized words in the King James Version (the version used by the LDS Church and most Christian denominations) of the Bible uses italics to render a correct English meaning. For example, it may have been necessary for the translators to insert an English word to make a sentence grammatically correct, so that word would appear in italics.

Footnotes: Footnotes contain information that lead to other resources. For example, a footnote my cross-reference a different scripture that sheds additional light on a topic. Another footnote might send the reader to the Topical Guide, which contains many other references, or to the Bible Dictionary, which explains the meanings of gospel words. Footnotes might contain Greek (GR) or Hebrew (HEB) translations or show modern synonyms (OR and IE) for archaic or obscure words. Finally, footnotes might refer to the Joseph Smith Translation (JST).

Use this information to tell us the Greek meaning of "rule" in Matthew 2:6.

How long would it have taken a workman to earn five hundred "pence" in the days of Jesus? Read Luke 7:41.

What is the sea of glass referred to in Revelation 4:6.

Joseph Smith Translation: Joseph Smith translated much of the Bible, but the translation was never finished. However, many of the items he translated are referenced in the footnotes of the LDS Edition of the King James Version of the Bible. Items that are too long to be in the footnotes are contained in a separate appendix to the Bible. A good example is in John 4:24.

Index to the Triple Combination: The Index in the triple combination (Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants) is an index for all three books. It contains information organized by topic and is much like the Topical Guide, but it gives a summary of each scripture reference, where the Topical Guide quotes from each reference.

Bible Dictionary: The Bible Dictionary has 1,285 biblical topics and discusses each from an LDS perspective. It contains chronological tables, a harmony of the four Gospels, an analysis of the apostle Paul's letters, Old Testament quotations found in the New Testament, and a list of weights and measurements.

Bible Maps and Photographs: This section helps students understand where different events occurred and how geography played a roll in those events.
