Ann Arbor in spring is all about Flowers
To me, flowers help set the tone for a city. And flowers are one of the things I love most about Ann Arbor in springtime -- It's like having fresh bouquets everywhere you look. The place is just jammed with flowers - flowering trees and front yard flower gardens and colorful hanging flower baskets are everywhere - and just looking at them makes me happy. So when May rolls around, I naturally want to echo that happy feeling and send flowers for Mother's Day. Ann Arbor sure offers plenty of inspiration.

I love all flowers, but orchids have to be one of my favorites.
Cymbidium Orchids for Mother's Day
How Flowers Swayed a Scientist
Everywhere I look, Mother's Day is the focus. Looking at all those blooms, reminds me of my husband's late uncle, a well known geneticist, right here in Ann Arbor. He was best known for his study of the effects of the HIroshima bombings, but in his private life he spent long hours tending his orchids.
He was the consummate scientist, and so in love with his science that he couldn't bring himself to really endorse the idea of a creator. No one stood a chance at turning his thinking around. And yet, what people couldn't do, flowers could.
Yes -- it was his orchids that made him doubt his own doubt.
He immersed himself in the study of genetics, and this much he knew -- that every part and particle of every living thing had a reason for being, something that contributed to its survival.
Every species he studied made sense to him. Except flowers. And most especially, orchids.
The Orchids have the Last Word
He said that there was no scientific reason for all that beauty. And that stumped him. All the functions of an orchid, he said, could be performed without the beauty. The stunning delicacy of the flowers and the myriad forms they took and the incredible array of colors -- all were unnecessary as far as survival of the species was concerned.
And yet, there they were, and there they'd been, for millenia, intoxicating their viewers and creating, in some cases, fans who were so dazzled as to be crazy with admiration, willing to risk life and limb for a glimpse of a rare, exotic orchid in some wild and dangerous place.
Flowers are Divine
It
looked to him, he said, as if some being had purposely put all that
beauty there simply to delight human beings. A gift, if you will, from
some creator. Nothing else made any sense. And that puzzled him. The
idea of lovliness bestowed as a gift, with great care, for its own sake.
It's that pure loveliness and beauty that fairly bursts from every petal, showering the joy of life on all viewers. I think that's why flowers are so loved, and why they are the perfect gift to show love on Mother's Day.
They tell the story of an Infinite Love for us, and when we give them, we pass that Love along to others.
So, help spread some of that Infinite Love --
Show your Love for Mom, or any other special moms in your life, for that matter -- your sister, your best friend, your Mother-in-Law, your Aunt -- and Send Flowers for Mother's Day!

Hi Elizabeth,
So glad you like the pics.
When I choose bouquets, I just naturally focus on flowers I love myself, and then I start thinking about what the other person likes. Of course, some people are easy to please, so nearly anything works. Interestingly, I find that every year I'm drawn to different colors and different arrangements. Sometimes I totally love pastel pinks, and other times, I just want to look at bright yellow, gold, and orange.
Really, if you love the flowers, I don't think you can go wrong.
