So you want to hear about my Prom, huh?
Senior Prom. Memories, fun, dancing. HA! Ok, so there was some dancing, and there was some fun, and I do have some memories. Was it all good? No. Was it all bad? No. Would I go back and do it again? No. Or at least I would change the course of things a little.
You may have a few questions about my Prom experience.
For Instance: Did I go with a date? Yes.
Did I ride in a limo? No.
Did I get lucky? No.
Did I have a good time with my friends? Mostly yes.
Hold On To The Night
Yes, my senior prom theme was the title of a Richard Marx song. How proud I am, let me tell ya. Please keep in mind, it is the junior class that does all that crap every year. They pick the theme, decorate and order all the souvenirs. When I was a junior, our theme was waaaayyy better, by the way. The color scheme was black and silver and I still have the tickets, and all the little souvenirs you can purchase. I wore a floor length powder blue sleveless gown and wore my hair up. Even had fake fingernails to boot.
My prom was held on May 6th. A Saturday evening. In a civic center in a neighboring town just slightly larger than our own. My entire class of 42 (yes I only had 42 people in my graduating class--small town life.) and our dates, and the junior class and their dates, and the chaperones, and all the parents who think they have to take pictures when their kids walk in all dressed up in prom attire, all crammed into this building for the dance. And before you ask, no, my mother did not show up to take pictures. She'd shown up the year before and I begged her to stay away this time.
As I said before, I took a date. Or he took me...whichever. We were not dating, however. We were just friends. the guy I had been seeing at the time hadn't wanted to go (should have seen that as a sign...) so I went with a guy friend who had recently broken up with his girlfriend. We went in a big group. We went to dinner first. Ruby Tuesday's.
Dinner was fun, the group was mostly fun...except the part where one of the couples in the group included the date I had gone to the junior prom with and his new girlfriend and I had to watch them be all lovey dovey all evening and...But, I digress.
The point is, it was a pretty fun time getting to the prom itself. Once we arrived at the venue, things continued to be pretty fun for a while. I took a lot of pictures with all my good friends (and yes, I still have most of them. The pictures, I mean) and laughed and chatted for a good portion of the night.
My best friend, we'll call him Walter, had been in the group as well. He'd already asked another girl to be his date long before my personal debacle came an=bout, so we weren't able to go together. Probably should have, considering both of our dates disappeared almost immediately upon our arrival and were not seen again until we left the place.
At one point, Walter and I were joking around with a couple of other friends, laughing it up and having a good time. We were standing near the table our group had been occupying. When the couple we were conversing with left, Walter and I both looked around the room, looked back at each other and said at the same time, "Where are our dates?"
Yes, where are our dates, indeed. I have a prom video. Yes, I still have it. It is on VHS if that tells you anything. I have watched it once or maybe twice. You do see me. In a class of forty-two, it's not hard to get some air time. You do not however see me with my date. Nor do you see Walter with his. In fact you rarely see our dates at all. Perhaps they were having their own fun somewhere else??
I did dance. I danced with friends, male and female and had fun. We danced the Electric Slide, the Macarena, YMCA, Shout and various other group dances. But, eventually it was time to leave and we all headed out. Then it was on to the party.
I will spare you the details of the raucous teenage party we went to. Mostly because I do not remember them. I know I had a good time, until we got home. Then it was not so fun. Hangover city.
All in all, prom was ok. I had a good time with friends. Not such a good time with vodka and beer, and learned a life lesson or two along the way.
I still laugh about the events of that night with Walter. Prom was, and always will be, an event that I will never forget. A small blip on the radar of my life, but memorable nonetheless. Whether it was good or bad, most of us remember our prom for some reason. There is something about it that will stick out in our minds long into our years. We may even tell our kids and grandkids about it. Well, maybe not all of it.... :)

Janetta - ahhhh prom night.
Never had one! Not a bad thing - I had the dress sense of a tramp and the personality of an amoeba :)
I guess there's a reason it is the subject of so many teen movies....
I have spared everyone the pictures of the night. Let's just pretend I was beautiful and dressed by Doves or something (ie Cindrella)
Sounds like you fun despite the missing date. It was fun to read about your experience. I went to 4, probably 3 too many. The parties were always before the actual prom, though. We would all go to dinner together and then over to someone's house for a few too many drinks before heading to the actual dance. I suppose it made it a little more tolerable. For the first 3, my parents let me stay out all night afterwards. When I came home in my date's football jersey the morning after the 3rd one, they changed the rules. That really ticked me off, so we took the vodka and tequila with us, and didn't stay at the last one very long.
If you still have pictures, you should post them!!
Laughing mom--we always had the part afterward. Senior year party was a rough night, once the vodka and beer decided they hated each other. hehe, what I remember was fun, I think :)
Yeah, but you had fun, and that's what really mattered, right?
I really liked reading this one!
Yes I did LM! I'm glad you liked it :) I'm going to have to find some prom dress pics to put on here--probly not my own, but some to giggle at :D
Damn I was really getting into that and then it ended, nice one !
Thanks BadCo--I may have to do a sequal to this one--Party Memories...or lack thereof :D
Cute Hub. I was going to go to my senior prom, but they had problems with people wearing dresses. Especially those without a lot of estrogen. Meh. Oh well! Tuxedo's are so...limiting.
G|M
thanks GM-- my advice--go naked--then they'll probably let you put on whatever you want hehe :)
I barely made it out of jail to make it to Prom(yes, I was still in high school), my date was worried I wasn't going to make it as she came to visit me in there, but I made out the day before, did the whole charade as she thought she was going to be prom queen or something(since she was head cheerleader, she thought like that). Come to the after party, I was bad and left her when the cops broke it up and went off with another girl. She showed up at my place, since I had a little place on my grandparents property with her friend and my cousin. My cousin told me to take off before she saw me. I did as advised, and she eventually forgave me some ten years later.
Oh my GT- that was quite a prom you had!! I think you should do a prom hub--that would be one interesting read LOL :D
I would but I didn't up gettin' any that night, however if I would have stuck to my date, perhaps there would have been a happier ending for the story. But it was still a good time with plenty of drama.
I went to my Junior Prom with all the girls..we only dated older guys. Not the immature boys in high school. We were too good for that. We had a good time. But sadly I missed my Senior Prom and Graduation. I got sick and ended up in the hospital. I had a horrible strep throat infection and it almost turned to Rheumatic Fever because I had a temp of 104...I was admitted in the hospital and missed out on all the fun....
Goldentoad--sorry you didn't get any on prom night :( Did you mean you might have gotten lucky if you had stuck with your date or if you had stuck it to your date?? LOL
LAmatadora--Oh my goodness!! You poor thing :( That is scary...but, you could always go back to HS ala Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed. Maybe you could do an undercover assignment for HubPages! :D
Oh trust me I had plenty of fun in high school days...maybe too much fun..I used to ditch 4th period to go to the taco shop and get a carne asada burrito and get stoned...Ha ha ha or have my boyfriend pick me up and I would leave campus for some afternoon delight....I was bad!!!
tsk tsk, you naughty girl ;) But hey...isn't that what teenage years are for?? I like to pretend I was an angel, but between you and me, I was...well, not. :D hehehe oh the memories....
Sounds like you had just as much fun as I did with the prom! I didn't like how the juniors decorate our prom either. eehh..But we dance the night away. And no, no drinking or driving for us.
Funny how you don't remember much after the prom from being drunk.
haha--from what I do remember, May, it's probably best some of it got lost along the way :D
Yeah, you're right.
We didn't have proms, but we did have the Leavers' Ball. All 100 girls in the Upper Sixth (last year of school, so we were 17 to 18) in the school hall, with assorted male partners if we wanted them (no obligation, many didn't). And because it was the UK, we could and did drink. There was something very funny about being all tarted up in ball dresses and getting drunk in the school hall, where we'd had Assembly every morning and lunch every afternoon aged 11 to 18.
LondonGirl--I think your Leaver's ball sounds more fun!! Alcohol always makes a ball gown more fun :D
I have to say your avatar rocks Janetta....I love Vivien Leigh!!!
Thanks girl! Me too--she was so beautiful :)
yes...I had my old profile ( which I deleted) but I had written a hub about classy ladies and actresses of the 40's and she was one of them...I have always adored her!!!
Sounds like a good one--you should do that one again :D I love their pictures. So timeless and classic back then.
Aww at least you went :) There were 800 people at my prom. Overall it was a good time. The limo to the prom was the best part. Then after e all ended up going to a hotel afterwards and watching pay per view porn. Good times.
LOL Colebabie--you just can't beat pay per view porn with your friends while wearing fancy dresses and tuxedos hahaha :D
Thanks to several seniors getting killed in a car accident the previous year, one smalltown high school near here put the kabosh on after prom partying and instead scheduled a late night supper, followed by movies and games, then breakfast. All inside the locked school. No one was allowed to leave before breakfast was over unless fetched by a parent. Not a bad idea considering.
that's a great idea jamagenee--It appeals to me now being a parent, thought I probably would have pitched a fit about it then. I know I would feel a lot better knowing my boys were safe inside the school instead of out doing who knows what.
Thanks for answering my request with such an interesting memoir!
Thanks Tom! :)
