Set Rules For Working From Home
54What to pay attention to when working from home
It is the dream of many people, to be able to earn a living while working from home. In this age of telecommunication advancements, it is becoming easier to actually achieve this dream, but with the dream there will be a price. This price doesn't have to be hard to pay, but you're going to have to develop a personal sense of dedication and commitment.
Perhaps you've stumbled on to something that will provide you with a large income for a small time commitment each day. Don't let yourself get lulled into a false sense of security because chances are good that you will have to put in a large amount of time initially to get that business up and running. Whether you want to call it "investing" or "sweat equity", you will want to get a solid foundation for yourself before planning those hours away from your job.
Develop a schedule for yourself, and then stick with it. This doesn't mean that you have to stay locked in, after all it is your business and you will develop a good sense of when the best times are for you to be "on the job". But off hours are also important for a person, so even when a good idea hits you don't let it drag you away from your relaxation time. Get in the habit of carrying a pocket notebook with you to write down idea. This will benefit you because it can happen that coming back to a idea after a few hours can be of bigger help than diving in immediately.
If you have family (spouse, kids, etc.) another problem is making sure that they know that you are "on the job" at certain times and should be left alone. This doesn't mean that you can't be spoken with, or even called away in case of emergency, but that you are at work and they have to respect that fact. After all, there's not much worse than being interrupted during a call with a potential client because your child is bored and can't find anything to watch on television.
Even if you're making money by the bucket, your spouse is not going to be too thrilled with you if you start ignoring them for your business. Not to say that you'd give them the cold shoulder, but the trap of making them wait until later can happen to the best of us. Remember that your spouse is your partner in more ways than one. Include them in your ideas, you never know when they may provide fresh insight into something that you're doing.
