Home Sewn Gifts for Dad
80Dad is one of the hardest to buy for during the holidays. It has become quite the challenge to find something that he can either use or needs. For those of you in the same boat and who can sew or not, this article might offer up a little inspiration.
Think about what he does or doesn't need and work from there. If you can't come up with anything then take a look at a few of these ideas to see if he could benefit from one of them.
Pajama Patterns
The men in my family have discovered pajama pants. Dad wears them until he goes to bed as do most of the men in my family. This has really helped me out in creating gifts for them during the holiday season.
Start with a basic pattern that you either can add elastic inside the waistband or a draw string. There are some great materials from lightweight cotton to heavy fleece out there that you can use to create these pajama bottoms. If you live in a warmer climate, your man might prefer the shorter version of these in a light cotton and for the colder climates, well fleece is the way to go.
The main thing you want to remember is length. Most men will not wear something that does not come down to their feet. In my family, all the men like the ones that come just a little longer than their legs so they have a little covering over their feet when they curl up on the couch.
Fleece Throws
This has got to be the easiest of all gifts to make. You can find fleece in any number of designs as well as just plain. It doesn't require any sewing to finish off one of these but there are a few things you can do to dress them up if you want to add a special touch.
Add blanket binding around the edges, crochet a nice edging around the blanket, cut strips into the blanket on both ends to make fringe.
Pick the color and designs that match dad's personality the best. You will need one full yard if the fleece is 60 inches wide. This will create a good size throw as it will be three feet by five feet approximately.
Professional accessories
If your father is still in corporate America and has to wear a shirt and tie to work, you can find patterns to make a tie and buying silk in a fabric shop is a lot less expensive than buying a silk tie.
Not feeling adventurous enough to make a tie, how about a silk handkerchief for his breast pocket. All you need is a twelve in square of the material and to finish the edges off with a rolled hem.
Does he need to wear an ID card around his neck? You can make a lanyard by taking a strip of fabric and adding a thumb press clip to it.
You can also take some wide elastic and sew it to a pocket organizer to create a visor organizer for his cell phone, sunglasses, pens, and notepads.
Just a few...
ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Hopefully, you found a little inspiration here and will soon be on your way to sewing up some new things for your dad this holiday season.
