Jimmi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower

Naieve boy goes off to college

My High School years were pretty uneventful and normal. I dated a lot of girls and took them out to lovers lane where we did a lot of hot kissing and fogged the windows a bit. I never made it past second base, not because I couldn't, but because of all the lectures my parents had given me about getting a girl pregnant and such. I grew up in a small town in the midwest and everyone knew everyone elses business. My ambition was to get the hell out of this town and find a place where I could be myself without everyone in town knowing my every move. The last thing I needed was to get stuck in small town hell, working a 9 to 5 in a factory, and supporting a wife I got stuck with just because she was easy enough to let me get her pregnant.

Many were the nights I went home with a case of the "Blues".....balls I mean. Amazingly I have a penis left after taking matters into my own hand (left one...in case we meet and you're wondering which to shake or not shake as the case may be). But better this than to fall into the "trap". The trap is getting a girl pregnant and having a shotgun wedding after which you get a job and support the girl and child for all your natural days, retire and die. Now I can name a few of my classmates who fell into the trap, either accidentally or on purpose, and have had long and wonderful marriages, though this would certainly be the exception.

I managed to get myself accepted at the state college, and the year of my enrolement was 1970. Many say that if you remember the 70's you weren't there. That has some validity I suppose as there are large gaps of time that I still can't recall. College was far enough away from my hometown that I could finally let my hair down....both figuratively and literally. As I arrived at college the aromas that filled the air were intoxicating...and again I mean figuratively and literally. There were a couple of "head shops" in town and the smell of the incense alone would give me a contact high.

The war in Vietnam was raging and this was a very liberal college town. Everywhere there were protests and strangely dressed people with flowers in their hair. Now I could get lost in a place like this, and thats exactly what I proceeded to do.

Edwin Star - WAR...What is it good for?

Rock And Roll

Now I'm going to do this thing in reverse order. I hope you don't mind as I leave the best part for last, though the true experience of the 70's was the combination of the three elements. I contend that the late 60's and early 70's gave the world the best music of any generation. Nothing before or since has been able to hold a candle to the music of that generation.  Close your eyes and think Woodstock, and Robin Williams in the movie "Good Morning Vietnam".   I'll just throw out a few names and if you were there let it take you back...I know it doesn't take much for me. And if you missed the 70's I'm sure you too have heard the sounds. Janis Joplin, Jimmi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, Yes, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, The Who, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, The Rolling Stones, Grand Funk Railroad, AC/DC, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot.....and I could go on and on, but you get the point. One song from the 70's stands out to me as the bellweather to the 70's....WAR by Edwin Star. I sometimes think that if there had been no Vietnam war we would have missed everything the early 70's had to offer.....well, maybe not the sex, but where would the 70's have been without the War protest, hippies, drugs, make love not war....OK...maybe there would have been less sex too....so Thank you LBJ, and Tricky Dick.

Drugs

My early days in college were filled with so many experiences my life in a small town had sheltered me from.  I was eager to expand my horizons and grasp life by the tail...Ok, by a lot of tail but thats getting ahead of myself.  Floating down the corridor of my dorm came a sweet new fragrance I couldn't put a name to.  I was soon to learn her name was Mary Jane, pot, marijuana or columbia gold.  I had heard it spoken of in my small town but had never seen, smelled or tasted it.  I've never been a smoker and my first toke off the golden weed came as a shock to my system.  It burned my throat and caused me to nearly cough up a lung.  How could something that smelled so good cause that kind of pain?  I got past the pain as the effects of the smoke hit my brain....far out!

Now if any of you youngsters are reading this, don't do drugs or you could fry your brain...and end up like me.  I write partly so I can remember things. Like what day is it and where did I leave my.....what was it I was looking for.....hmmmm.  Oh well, it certainly was fun while it lasted.  Smoking pot did lead to harder drugs like hashish, LSD, and cocaine.....but only a few times.  Been there done that and now the chapter is closed.  I did manage to build the drug use into a tidy little business that supplemented Restaurant work for putting myself through school.  Fortunately for me I outgrew the need for the drugs.  I was ambitious and the drug use just made me lazy and forgetful and the munchies added too many pounds to my body.  I liked the cocaine but it was too expensive to risk an addiction and after all it killed an awesome athlete, Len Bias from Maryland.

Eric Clapton - Cocaine

Sex---The Free Love era

Going to college as a virgin in retrospect was a good thing...at least I made it to college. I'm so thankful to have grown up in the 70's. I was a little afraid to try sex at first, the lectures of my parents playing in the background of my mind. I figured I would take it slow and decided to try oral sex on my current girlfriend first. Now there's almost nothing I like better than performing this cunnilingual task today but that first time was like that first toke on the wacky backy.....I did my duty but ewwwwwww what a horrible taste....I brushed my teeth and tongue for an hour....how on earth could anyone like this????? Let me add....it's an aquired taste...much like a fine wine.

There were new girlfriends every week or so and soon I decided it was time to lose my virginity. There were no violins playing, no candlelight dinner, and I was damned sure not going to be stoned for this event....this memory had to last me for a lifetime. I had imagined it so many times, how it would feel, a slippery vagina to take the abuse my hand had only known. I was not disappointed. This was the essence of life!!!!! Nearly all of my waking hours since puberty had been focusing on this one act and now it was here and I was actually having sex with a real woman. I had not fallen into the marriage trap in high school and I didn't get addicted to drugs, but my friend, let me tell you....I got addicted to sex.  I nearly flunked out of college because of sex.  I would fornicate through tests, exams, breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Each year I had to go to summer school to improve my GPA enough to get back into school the next year.  Summer school classes were easier and so it seemed were the young ladies.  Now I've heard of AA and sex addictions, but I have yet to attend a sex addicts annonymous meeting....though do you think I might find some action there?

Sex wasn't the scary thing in the 70's that it is today. The worst thing you could catch in those days could be cured with a shot. These days the wrong sex partner can kill you. Sex in the 70's was a very casual thing. You'd go to a party, smoke a little dope, listen to some rocking tunes and usually find a willing casual partner to share the night with you. Sex was fun, sex was exciting, sex was....lets face it...it was sex, and who can get too much sex???

I think I still fantasize about meeting a stranger and having a night of casual guiltfree animalistic sex, and no I don't want to exchange names or phone numbers. I blame it on the 70's.

A couple of sex tales and I'll open the floor for comments. One day I set out to see how many women I could sleep with in a 24 hour period...yes, I took showers, and with a well thought out game plan was able to have sex with five women that day. Another example is my sex ed class in which there were nine women and I had sex with seven of them.....well it was an erotic subject don't you think?

If you remember the 70's or just have a college experience you'd like to share leave a comment.

Really? Do we taste that bad? I've always been told "sweet, may I have more?" Were they just lying to me? Seven in one day? Not one that you wanted to go back for 2nds and 3rds with? Again I'm just speaking from my own personal experience. Sorry if I seem naive.

I was born later on the 70s, the only thing I remember is watching Star Wars. Sorry dude I can't relate to any of this as I am not for sex with multiple women in a single day let alone for a lifetime. I think drugs and sex can lead to the devil.

Randy, it was 5 not 7....and isn't that avatar the picture they took of you at Woodstock?? And though I can see a little butt cleavage, I agree with golden....like the other avatar better...though this one gives meaning to the thought of having "dirty" sex.

No RB...women don't taste that bad....maybe that one wasn't ripe or something.

Like I said its an aquired taste.   I have to keep practicing though.  But imagine this kid trying it for the first time....it was like the first time I ate an oyster...I didn't know what to expect.

Golden, what can I say, I've lived a decadent life....not perfect, but full of fond memories.

Agvulpes...thanks for the read....hope those were good memories I stirred.

Anna Marie....yes dear, you missed a great decade.....sorry :-(

Dame,  yes sex can kill you now if you're not careful,  but not by just doing it too much, just with the wrong one.

An interesting hub that I can relate to in part. I went through the tail-end of the 60s and got totally into the whole idea of the hippy movement and I did a lot of drugs and became addicted to downers at one point. I had some very bad times on acid and also some very good ones and have had all sorts of experiences but I missed out on the sex due to my shyness mainly and because I was looking for a relationship and true love not just sex. I'm still looking! I went to a lot of big festivals including two Isle of Wight festivals. The music I was into in my early teens and it has stayed with me as I became a singer-songwriter myself.

I was in my teens in the last half of the 70's. I was a goody goody then.....sometimes I regret that but then again some times I don't. I never did the drug stuff. YOua re right about the songs, they have never been that way since.

You also gave me a lesson from the other side of the equation. I never knew how it was for a guy back then. We were too worried about ourselves, just as you were.

R. Blue profile image

R. Blue  says:

Bard, I'm not sure how you got into the hippy movement and didn't get laid all the time...thats what the movement was all about...Make love not war. I personally was just trying to do my part.

Lady G, I had been too good for too long when I got to college....and when I let loose, I let loose. See, I didn't want to get to this stage of my life and regret not having done all that stuff. Now if I were to kick the bucket today, I've lived a very interesting life....yes there are things that I regret, but my college years aren't part of any regrets.

RB, what a great read for a first hub. Man it brought it all back to me. I think we must bwe of the same age too, or mighty close. I also never got hooked on drugs, as i never liked the green ahze all over everything for weeks after dropping acid once. Sex and pot is really great. I fell in love with eating at the Y early on and the first time I did it. It became one of my uh, well you know.

Don't pay any atention to innocent toad, he's just jealous that he missed what we did. He is just as wicked too. So, let's drink one for the 70's scotch on the rocks, here's to ya my man.

I didn't even have a girlfriend until I was 18 and had left school and that didn't last long and I had had long hair and the hippy look since I was 16 and started going to festivals and getting sent home from school because of how I looked! I had heard of course that playing the guitar and being a singer got the women after you but I never found that to be the case either and most of my life I have been single! I have known other guys who have had similar tales to tell so I am wondering now if it's maybe because I was in the UK? Some of my past is detailed in CJ Stone's books and writings - he is on here in case you haven't already met. I met him in '71 so he knows me very well and is a very good friend. I also never got on well with smoking dope and have had some terrible and embarrasing experiences because of it! Perhaps I will write some of them up for here?

R. Blue profile image

One extremely beautiful girl I went out with you could only get as far as holding hands with and yet she used to go to rock gigs and clubs and hang out with hippy types. When I was with her I am sure many guys who saw us would have felt jealous but they wouldn't have if they were actually with her. I also went out with another who was not much better when it came to sex but at least you could kiss her. Maybe I was just unlucky?

I awakened at homw in my bed with red stains on my briefs and sand all over me. It took me a week to recover that one. haha I was awful, for that. I also put on a show with some pros in an oil field convention that I won't go into, on stage as the only one with the balls to go for it. I was a rat for sure

It was a heady (no pun intended:-) time for sure! Do you ever wonder if the perfect trifecta could have occurred with only 2 of the 3 ingredients? The rock n'roll and drugs surely fueled the sexual revolution, the drugs and sex contributed to the awesome music...

I was a few years behind you chronologically, but started earlier (in high school). Can only add one thing from my personal experience: love conquers all. Including shyness and inhibitions and squeamishnes over foreign tasting bodily fluids! Here's to acquired tastes!! MM

I entered the '70's at age 13 ('57 is an excellent vintage when it comes to women ...) so for me the early years of the decade was a case of being on the outside and dying to get in.

I lived in Manchester, northern England, which has always been a force in the music scene of any decade - Toy Wilson, The Hacienda, Joy Division, northern soul ...... I hated Top of the Pops but loved "Radio Caroline" - now celebrating 45 years of priate radio. (Also, film just been released)

The mid to late '7Os saw me at many music fests and concerts - it was such a great time. I never touched drugs as I had (and still have thankfully) a natural 'high'. I did give a lot of thank you's and got a thanked a lot in tents and other such cosy places. it was a safe fun time.

I once had sex with the same man...you...for 7 hours without stopping for anything more than another drink or a potty break.I think it was 1974, slipping into 1975.

All that is true, but don't go telling tales in here...they'll all want some. Hell...they'll all think I made up another ID and wrote that myself. Was the best night of my young life!!

I was in that era of the 70's. Came in a bit late for me. I I was 13 in 1971, you know, real impressionable. Smoked my first cigarette, etc etc. Went through more this decade than my entire life. Became a young woman, finished High School (and I mean 'high' school). My town was a little behind the times about 2 years but by the time the Alcapulco Gold hit, I was ready. Alice Cooper was my first REAL concert in 1975 the 'Welcome to my Nightmare' show. Only concert to this day that didn't bore me to death. I moved away briefly, returned. Got pregnant, married, gave birth, got a divorce and started doing the disco scene, all during this decade. Thank God I survived it! Now that world seems far away. My life is changed, my kids are grown and I'm in the career I always wanted. I have over 11 years sobriety from alcohol and even longer from other substances. So there you have it.
