Sex and the City -The Movie

Loved It --But Here's what was missing
This weekend, I ventured out to the movies like every other woman who lived and breathed Sex and the City for so many years. I was anxious to know where the plot would take Carrie Bradshaw and the love of her life 'Big.'
The movie opened with a great synopsis of what had happened from the time we saw the show end to where it was ready to begin. Because this review is fresh on the heels of the movie's release, I won't spoil the plot for those of you who have not seen the movie entirely. I'll leave that for my fellow bloggers and critics. What I will say is that I was deeply impressed by Sarah Jessica Parker's range of acting at the beginning of this movie when the Big event did not go as planned. Thumbs up for making the rest of us feel the emotion and depth of the pain her character was forced to endure.
Thankfully, this critic found that these women remained true to their original character qualities. Miranda remained the cynical attorney, wife and mother we knew her to be. Samanta was the sexually free spirit. Charlotte was still the believer of love and Carrie was...well...she was Carrie.
Here's what was missing...
I found myself wanting more Samantha. Samantha had helped to make this show highly entertaining over the years doing and saying things that the average woman would never dare. While she had a few sharp lines during the movie, there just didn't seem to be enough of her.
Then we had the downfall of the 'Steve' character which seemed rather uncharacteristically like him at all...I know, I know...those of you who worshipped this movie might have liked the dramatic twist as it showed the 'evolution' of the character, but I was sorely disappointed. Sure, it made for a good turn of events, but really...I had hoped for something more.
Then, there were our supporting characters, or lack thereof....What I found to be terribly lacking were the lines of some of our favorite supporting characters. As an avid fan, the thing that made Anthony, Charlotte's gay friend, the wedding planner so enjoyable on the show had always been his wit and humor. In this movie, it was as if his lines either got edited out or someone forgot to give him something a little more clever to say. I think if the 'fashion' sequences had been cut down a little bit more, we might have been able to enjoy a solid scene with these guys.
Jennifer Hudson made her first debut since 'Dreamgirls' on the big screen in this movie. While she and Sarah Jessica Parker had great onscreen chemistry, I found her performance to be flat in some scenes and I honestly could not tell where the blame might lay (i.e. with the script or the actress). That being said, I guess I would have to rate the performance as a solid 'B' --partly because I am a big Jennifer Hudson fan and want to see her do well.
My disgruntles with the movie aside, I would still recommend that Sex and the City fans definitely indulge in this reunion with the girls. You will laugh, cry and get angry and yes, despite my gripes, you will have a good time.
