Sex Offenders Kicked Off MySpace

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox furnished MySpace with a list of names on the state's sex offender registry which MySpace used to evict 200 individuals from the social networking website. The MySpace site can be continuously updated as names are added to the state's sex offender registry. However, officials from MySpace and Cox's office acknowledged that there are ways to get around the protections with fake names and changed email addresses.

Thomas Lazar, an attorney who represents dozens of sex offenders expressed the hope that the state would "would tweak the law" to take into account people like his clients who no longer have a sex offense on their record but will be on the registry for at least 25 years. "They lump these really bad guys right next to a 17-year-old who slapped a girl on the ass on a bus. they don't make any distinctions in Michigan," Lazar said. "And now they are stuck on the registry. They can't get a job. They can't get an apartment. They can't get anything."
