Novelty is the Keyword for This Election

Sarah Palin has burst onto the political scene with the surprise and rapidity of a terrorist event but with the opposite effect--she is a pleasant surprise, full of charm and wit and she is, to say the least, very easy on the eyes.

This is surely a novelty in politics.

Even more of a novelty is the fact that she is a Republican Vice-Presidential candidate--and that of course has great implications which I need not point out.

So it is an exciting time in American political events and the upcoming elections will surely be a novel one no matter who is the final victor..or should I say 'victor-ess'?

Palin was born as Sarah Heath on February 11, 1964 in Sandpoint, Idaho, to Chuck and Sally Heath. Later that year, Chuck Heath, a science teacher and track coach, relocated the family to Skagway, Alaska, before settling in Wasilla, about 45 miles (30 km) northeast of Anchorage, a few years later. In 1984, Palin was named Miss Wasilla and finished second in the Miss Alaska contest. She graduated from the University of Idaho in Moscow in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in communications and journalism. On August 29, 1988, she eloped with Todd Palin.

Palin was first elected to the Wasilla City Council in 1992, and won a second term in 1994. Two years later, she was elected mayor of Wasilla, then with a population of about 5,000. She campaigned on a platform that highlighted her born-again Christian faith, opposition to abortion and membership in the National Rifle Association, a break from previous mayoral campaigns that focused on the city's infrastructure issues.

As mayor, Palin was known for improving sewers and roads while lowering taxes. She was also a strong proponent of development, controversially raising the local sales tax to help pay for a $15 million sports complex, and lobbying for federal funding of local projects. In 2002, barred from running for a third term by term limits, she ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for Alaska's lieutenant governorship.

The following year, Governor Frank Murkowski (R) named Palin to the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, a quasijudicial agency that monitored oil and gas projects in the state. However, Palin resigned the following year in a falling-out with Murkowski after alleging that another commissioner, Alaska Republican Party Chairman Rudy Ruedrich, had improperly sought contributions to the GOP from oil companies.

In 2006 she defeated Murkowski in the Republican gubernatorial primary, campaigning as a reformist willing to stand up to powerful oil interests, and furthering her reputation for bucking the Republican political establishment in Alaska. Despite this, during the race she publicly supported a $220 million federal allocation for a bridge project, later mocked as the "bridge to nowhere," that would connect a sparsely populated island to the mainland. (Palin, as governor, later halted the project, after the federal earmark was canceled.)

Palin went on to win the governorship that November, defeating Democratic former Governor Tony Knowles in the general election. She was sworn in as governor on Dec. 4, 2006, becoming the first woman to hold the office

In 2007, Palin backed passage of a bill that would allow the construction of a pipeline to carry natural gas from Alaska's North Shore to the lower 48 states through Canada. She also backed a reformulation of the state's oil tax rate, allowing it to rise in tandem with oil prices. Despite Palin's reputation as an ethics reformist, a bipartisan state legislative panel in August had been convened to investigate allegations that Palin had improperly sought the firing of her former brother-in-law, a state trooper.

Palin was a favorite of social conservatives for her opposition to abortion, especially after deciding to bring a pregnancy to term after learning that her unborn child had Down syndrome. She also supported the teaching of creationism and abstinence-only sexual education in public schools. She had also backed a 1998 amendment to the state constitution that banned same-sex marriage.

On August 29, 2008, McCain named Palin his running mate. Palin accepted the nomination on September 3 at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Palin and her husband September 1 had announced, in a statement released by the McCain campaign, that their daughter Bristol Palin, 17, was five months pregnant and planned to marry the father, who was identified as Levi Johnston, an 18-year-old high school classmate of hers.

Baptized a Roman Catholic at birth, Palin was later baptized in an Assembly of God church, and currently attended a nondenominational evangelical church. With her husband, a commercial fisherman and oil production operator for BP PLC, Palin had five children.

It is  reported October 21,  that the Republican National Committee has given   more than $150,000  to Sarah  Palin and her family since  Presidential Candidate John McCain chose  her as his Vice Presidential choice in August of 2008. 

Is it a ton of money?  Well it's  more than Palin's $108,000 yearly salary as Alaska's governor – and news of it has brought a hailstorm  of complaint from Democrats who say it reveals that  Palin is  a fraud as well as from Republicans who wonder why their campaign monies  went for fashion.

Apprently the only ones not complaining: are those  who do this sort of thing for a living.   

“She is dressing appropriately for the job she is going after,” said Lauren Rothman, a Washington stylist of Styleauteur.     Palin – and those responsible for her image – faced a special challenge in the first days of the McCain-Palin ticket: How do you introduce a veritable unknown – a self-proclaimed “hockey mom” – as both a down-to-earth girl-next-door and a “maverick” prepared to become the leader of the free world?   

Betsy Fisher, the owner of the well-known  clothing store in Dupont Circle, says Palin and her people were able to straddle the line. “She does not look like she is wearing particularly expensive clothes,” Fisher said. “She looks like you could be her, too.”      

Colleen Abrie, a “head-to-toe stylist”  in the San Francisco Bay Area, said that it is “important to note that you are talking about branding a person who you are launching into the public eye.”    “It is a good thing she has all that Armani, she needs all the points in her favor that she can get,” Abrie said. “If you are looking the part, you are halfway there.”      

  According to financial disclosure forms, the RNC spent $75,000 at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, $49,000 at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and smaller amounts at others upscale department stores.     

If Palin becomes the next VP, we can expect many more extravagances.  After all, she is a beautful woman, and needs to look the part.
