It is rumoured that women's hats were a factor in ending the attempted invasion of the UK by Napoleonic forces in 1797. The French soldiers were supposed to have mistaken the women which were seen at a distance in their red shawls and Welsh hats, for British redcoats, whose uniform had the same tall black hats..
