Shaggalicious, Baby
80One of the most enduring hairstyles is the shag hairstyle. It first gained popularity in the 70s when David Cassidy from the television show The Partridge Family got his hair cut in a shag. He was the biggest teen idol in the world at the time and many people, both men and women, wanted to copy his look. Many people asked for the hairstyle (men and women) and posters of Cassidy soon began appearing in hairdressing salons throughout North America.
Another icon of the 70s, Farrah Fawcett had a long shag hairstyle. Farrah had become a huge star after appearing on the television show Charlie's Angels. Her million copy selling poster (pictured below) which appeared on the walls of many teenage boys (and probably older men’s) bedrooms further enhanced the popularity of the shag. Her hairstyle also became popular with hairstylists and the general public. Many, many women got themselves a "Farrah" haircut...whether they suited it or not; they all wanted to look just like Farrah Fawcett.
The shag sort of disappeared for a while and then made a comeback in the 90s when Jennifer Aniston from Friends had her hair cut in a medium shag style.
The show Friends was the biggest thing to happen to television in the 90s. The entire cast became almost instant stars and Jennifer Aniston quickly became one of the most popular cast members; many young girls and women wanted to look like Rachel.
Here is Jennifer Aniston wearing the "Rachel shag." This hairstyle became huge all over the world...a lot of women wanted that shag.
The "Rachel shag" is an example of a medium length shag hairstyle.
And the popularity of the shag still goes on into the 21st century. Actress Jodie Foster was recently photographed wearing a shag hairstyle. It frames her face nicely, adds body to her hair and gives the head a lively looking appearance. It is a great look for a woman in her forties.
A shag hairstyle is defined as being multilayered, with the shorter layers closer to the top of the head. The shag hairstyle is a true unisex hairstyle and is one of the most attractive. It adds body to flat hair and enhances curly hair. It frames the face nicely and most people suit it.

I had that poster. Farah was so hawt in her day. Jodie still looks good too. Good job.
By the way.....love the title!
Thanks for the comments. I've had shags many times. Actually, I usually end up getting a shag hairstyle. Except for the time I permed my hair but we won't talk about that...
I had to vote Jodie Foster, I have had a crush on her for as long as i can remember, great addition to the hair raising Hub Mob Challenge.....jimmy
I've always had a girl crush on Jodie Foster since people used to tell me I looked like her :)
I never had enough hair to shag (I didn´t knew this meaning for shag lol). But now that I saw Jodie Foster wearing it I´m a buff :D
Oh dear. I can't read the comments here without smirking. Do you know what having a shag means in in the UK? I daren't tell you for fear of the hubpages moderator! That said I enjoyed the hub, and seeing your picture of David Cassidy took me right back to the 70s when I had an enormous crush on him.
I wish I had hair to shag ;)
Yes...I'm very aware of what shag means :) I kept giggling while I was writing it :)
Very, very shaggalicious, baby!
GREAT title, Uninvited. It really got me right into the hub, which was also fun to read. Shouldn't it have a higher score? Great job anyway.
The score will go up in the next few hours...hopefully.
Love it lol! Great hub!
I love the fact you show how to cut the hair that's great!
That Farrah poster lived on my bedroom wall when I was kid! Great hub!
I forgot about the shag, and used to have my hair cut that way. When Farrah's style was the rage, I had it cut and frosted with highlites like hers, boy I have had hair adventures. Nowadays, simple is best for me. LOL!
This hubmonster topic is getting to be entertaining!
Well done hub, Uninvited!
I thought that was pretty good!
cool! I had shag cuts when I was younger, too. Never would have considered Farah's haircut a shag, but I guess I didn't understand the technicalities. Ah, the things we can learn from a HubMob!
This was a great Shag flashback. I remember sporting the shag in middle school. It was the bomb! I think that the hairstyles of today are simply a variation of the original shag do's.
A couple of years ago I had a modern looking shag cut that was more layers than anything else, but could look shaggy if I styled it the right way. Shags are fun and creative, but I would not want a Carol Brady one for sure. Thanks for the great hub!
Oh Behave! Shagadelic hub, baby! :)
I had the Rachel cut back in the day. I loved it! As I get older, I'm going more and more *shaggy* he he for non U.S. hubbers.
Yup, I too had a shagalicious cut back in the day. Here is how I achieved my shag haircut. Made a ponytail as high up on the head as possible. Then snip the ponytail off. Now you have a perfect shag. Don't know if I'd ever try doing that again! I often wonder if I was under the influence of something when I did that!! LOL
Thanks for all the comments. Everyone loves a good shag ;)
Great Hub Susan! I used to wear my hair in a shag for quite a few years... I hate to think of how long ago...
regards Zsuzsy
Good job I really like the picture of the long hair shag, smile.

I had a shag! I've had about a hundred shags. That's what they used to do with my hair because they didn't know what else to do with it.
Loved David Cassidy! He even told me that he thought he loved me, too. :)
Great hub, Susan!
