Dead Zones Conservation and Rescue
72The World's Oceans
The World's oceans and all living ocean life is in terrible trouble. Why? Fertilizers! Too much nitrogen has found it's way into our oceans. They first started testing the world's oceans back in 1960. The difference from where we were to where we are hopefully will astonish citizens living by major water ways. If the world doesn't get a handle on this here and now, the results will be catastrophic. There will be no more Jelly fishes, Hermit crabs or Nudibranches.
- 1960 only 49 dead zones were known.
- 1970 only 87 dead zones were known.
- 1980 scientist discovered 162 dead zones.
- 1995 the number jumped to 305 dead zones.
- 2007 there are more than 405 dead zones just in the ocean alone. Since 1995 scientists have discovered major dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay, Columbia River Gorge and other such related areas.

On an average African elephants kill more than 200 people a year. Dogs kill approximately 18 people a year. As for sharks? 12! That's right 12. Four of which died due to complications caused by being in a remote area, far from medical care.
In case you didn't know, over 100,000,000 sharks were caught and killed just last year alone. 100 million! 75,000,000 sharks and fins ended up in back alley ways and in shark fin soups as far as Asia. These sharks were killed by sportfishermen's hooks, pollution, gill nets, longlines, and worst of all shark finning fisheries. That is where they cut the shark fins off to sell on the black market for shark fin soup. Which costs on the average $100 American dollars a bowl.
People I have to ask, is this justified? Why are we okay with this kind of destruction? Do you realize what's even going on here? If the shark industry is allowed to keep up the pace of killing more than 25 million sharks a year, in five years- there will be no more sharks. That is right, by 2014 all major shark species will be existent........gone! No more! Done. And why? Because you turned a blind eye to the matter! That's right- YOU!
Something has to be done. Something needs to be done and soon! Something has to give before we all find ourselves past facts and unable to take drastic measures. I don't think the world understands the severity of the situation. Here today as I write this- some sharks species are being wiped out like the Great White Shark is- at an alarming rate. If something is NOT done today, the world as we know it will not be the same in 5 years and it will be to late to change it back. They'll be all gone. People will have to turn to a text book to see what sharks' looked like.

- GMO Bans, Laws, and Labels from Around the World
Photo credit: David Gould / Getty Images Prince Charles has called them the "biggest environmental disaster of all time," while agriculture industrialists like Monsanto swear they're safe for human consumption and a boon for the environment. Genetically modified foods are nothing if not controversial, and that controversy spans the globe. From Ireland and the European Union to Africa and Japan, and all the way back to the U.S., various bans, laws, and labels can make GMOs difficult to keep up with. Here's a roundup of the world in GMOs.... Read the full story on TreeHugger - 5 days ago

I have long believed after many years of study, that mankind is going to revert back to Stone Age living. This will be the inevitable outcome of the depletion of global energy supplies (oil, coal, nature gas, uranium). - OCEAN COLOR SCIENCE FOCUS: DEAD ZONES
"Dead zones" in this context are areas where the bottom water (the water at the sea floor) is Anoxic meaning that it has very low (or completely zero) concentrations of dissolved oxygen.

You're right RKHenry, something has to be done. The thing is greed blinded people from the truth that the earth is crawling to its demise! Very sad.
Sincere thanks for this hub dear.
And as usual, those in charge of monitoring these conditions have been asleep at the switch for the last 30 years.
Good article - hope a LOT of people read it!
Awesome RK, as if I would expect anything less!
Extraordinary, yet not surprising. I had a Natural Science 111 last semester and we covered much of this, and other disturbing topics pertaining to sustainability. it is amazing how obstinate big industry is when it infringes on their bottom line. I guess we'll all have to die off before they get the hint. Thanks for posting this.
Amazing how many dead zones and areas for concern there are already. Thanks for creating awareness on this literally life or death situation for all of us.

Very interesting! How far out from the coasts do these dead zones extend?
