Assessing Home Storage Problems

Most people prefer to have a neat and tidy home. It certainly makes life more relaxing while in the house, and easier to find things when you need them. It looks much better too, for your family and for visitors.

However, it is probably true that most of us fall well short of perfect when it comes to neatness, and would benefit from a campaign of de-cluttering our homes and getting them better organized. The problem is often motivation to get started, especially if the house, garden shed and garage are all in a mess. Once you get going, though, sorting out the clutter in your home should be relatively simple, so long as you are ruthless and methodical about it.

How much time it will take, and what it will cost, to get your house spick and span, depends of course on the amount of clutter you have. But with a bit of effort, and ensuring you have the right storage cabinets and shelves for the home, garage and garden shed, you should end up in a much tidier environment.

The biggest stumbling block can be getting started; making that decision to set aside time to sort out the storage and untidiness problems that you have. It is your decision. The end result will be worthwhile, so work up some enthusiasm for yourself, and other members of the family at home if appropriate, and get started.

Assessing the overall storage problem in a detached way is probably the best way to start, so you can get things in perspective, it least in your own mind. Take a good look at each bedroom, the bathroom and kitchen, then outside at the garage. You can see the scale of the problem, and hopefully it is not quite as bad as you thought.

Applying Home Shelving and Storage Solutions to Your home

It is best to clear out surplus “junk” and condemn it to the landfill site. That way the home, garden and garage storage solutions which you need will be for things that you really need and use, and nothing more. Once that is done, it makes sense to check if there is anything cluttering the inside of the home that could best be stored outside. Having done that, it is a good time to tackle the garage storage and yard shed, if you have one.

The way you organize your outside storage can be seasonal, so consider that as you begin to sort out the garden tools and equipment. Garden tool storage, and equipment too, can be either in the garage or shed, whichever is the most convenient. Organize these gardening items with convenience, preservation and safety in mind. Safety is of particular importance if you have children around.

If you think you do not have enough space on floors and walls, then overhead garage storage racks can relieve many of your outdoor storage problems. The same is true of the shed if it has sufficient strength in the roof. There are some particularly good garage overhead racking systems on the market, but they do come at a price. You will probably find them good value, though.

With the outside now well organized, and the indoor junk removed, you can now concentrate on the home’s interior storage. If you have children, get them involved, especially in sorting out their bedroom cabinets and wardrobes, and of course the toy box or boxes. Try and instill some discipline in them by encouraging them to appreciate how tidy their home is becoming. That will be of benefit to the whole family as they grow older.

Cabinets and shelves for the home comes in all shapes, sizes, designs…and prices. Decide what you need for each room, then what you can afford. If you are short of cash, make use of used kitchen cabinets, bathroom shelving, bookcases, cupboards, and so on. They may not look as good as the spanking new equivalents, but the house will seem so much better with all the clutter hidden away.
