Shih Tzu's are a member of the toy dog group. They got their name from the Chinese language - 'Lion Dog'. They are normally associated with China, but researchers have found that they originated in Tibet in the 17th century.

Most dogs have been members of the AKC (American Kennel Club) for many decades, and even back to the 1800's. These dogs however, were only recognized by the American Kennel Club in the late 1960's. This was the decade when the Shih Tzu breed of dog became very popular as pets, and as a result were officially recognized by the AKC.

Friendly and sweet, this breed are loveable pets. They like to run and play with their owners. Shih Tzu dogs are excellent house pets and great with children. In comparison to other breeds of dog, they are very friendly when it comes to strangers and other pets.

Despite their small stature, they require some daily exercise. Walking them for around twenty minutes on a leash is a great way to give them the exercise they need. Because of their small size, they can also exercise indoors by running and playing in your house or apartment.

Shih Tzu dogs are not suited to living outside or to hot, humid weather. They have long coats, so they need to be groomed every day.

If they live a healthy life, these dogs can live up to fourteen years. The main health problem this breed can encounters CHD. Other, less serious health issues include renal dysplasia, patellar luxation, PRA, Otitis Externa, KCS, portacaval shunt and entrpion.

Many veterinarians suggest testing for eye problems, hip dysplasia, dental problems and renal dysplasia. These are loveable toy dogs and it's no wonder they have increased in popularity since the 1960's.
