Short Tail vs. Long Tail Keywords with Chris Sandberg

Keywords play an essential role on your site's success. There are 2 types of keywords. The short tail keywords and long tail keywords. Short tail keywords have a broad coverage and includes general things whereas long tail keywords are narrow and more distinct.

To help you understand more clearly what these two types of keywords are, I will share with you Chris Sandberg's experience when he bought his new laptop. By the way, Chris is Russell Brunson's SEO manager. Just recently, Chris bought a new laptop. For such an expensive purchase, Chris wanted to make sure that what he gets is worth the price. He first did a research on different products online. First time, he was a bit general on his searches because he was unsure, yet, of exactly what type, size or brand of laptop he wanted. He then think about the different features that he needed the most. Features like internet access, office applications and durability are what he needed most. Price plays a major factor on the purchase, too.

After knewing what he needs, it is time for him to get more specific on his searches. Instead of just typing "laptop" or "best laptop", he is now in searched for more specific keywords like “basic laptops” or “light weight laptops.”

As he gather additional information about different laptops, Chris decided to go with a Dell laptop because of the best reviews and the exact product he was looking for. This time, Chris is one step away from purchasing. All he needs is just to find a great deal.

We can learn from Chris' experience that searches using long tail keyword indicate that people are more likey to buy than just look around or collect information. You can use this in your business as well, like if you have specific products to offer, you can pay someone to optimize your page for that keyword or phrase. The long tail keywords may bring less traffic to your website than the short tail searches, but it is also has higher probability that are ready to your products.
