A threat...Running away with his back to them?

Woodrow Player Jr., 22 was shot 8 times in the back, thrown over a fence after he was dead, and his body was kicked by police as reported by Civil Rights Leaders on the ABC News Station. They claim police were responding to a possible domestic violence report in a small community in Athens, an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County.

When Police came to the area, they stopped a man in a car who matched the suspects description but the man reportedly ran "away" from them. The Police said, they believed he was armed. The police shot at him and hit him in the back eight times, killing him. Later, they did find a gun in his car. But the fact is, he was unarmed and was running away from the policemen.

My question is how can he possibly be considered such a threat, while running away, with his back to them, that they felt they had to use lethal force on him? I really have a big problem with this. I could understand it, if he was known to be armed and was running, gun pointed at them, towards them and they felt their lives were in danger.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson and other activists conducted what he called a "civil rights investigation" at the shooting scene near Imperial Highway today and talked to family members and eyewitnesses.

The witnesses "sharply disputed" the Sheriff's Department's version of the shooting, saying Player did not have a gun on his person, did not threaten officers, was shot while running and there were no warning commands given, Hutchinson said in a statement.

"The eyewitness accounts in the Player shooting are so disturbing and conflicting they merit a full fast-track violation probe by the (U.S.) Justice Department," he said.

He said he made the request to U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien this afternoon

The facts are, he was unarmed and while he may have been guilty of trying to evade the police, that does not give them the right to kill him. I can't believe that life means so little to people these day's and that the very people who are supposed to help protect it, are carelessly and willfully ending it.

There were definitely other alternatives that they could have used to apprehend the suspect without terminating his life.

The following links are just a few incidents where the Police crossed the line. This really needs to stop. The Police who do not cross the line suffer because of the ones who do.

UPDATE: The Preliminary Investigation!

According to a preliminary investigation, the incident began when sheriff's deputies from the Lennox Station responded to an alleged "man with a gun" call. The suspect was allegedly driving a vehicle.

The deputies made a "felony" traffic stop, and the suspect got out of his car and ran, Thompson said.

Deputies gave chase, and Player twice pointed a "dark object" at deputies, causing them to believe he was armed with a handgun.

When investigators searched the alley where the shooting occurred, they recovered a cellphone next to Player, not a gun, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

"It appears the dark object was a cellphone," Whitmore said.

Player was declared dead at the scene.

A loaded firearm was found in Player's vehicle, Thompson said, but it's unclear what Player may have been carrying or what deputies thought he was carrying when they opened fire.

The shooting is being investigated by the sheriff's department, the county's Office of Independent Review and the district attorney's office.

Hutchinson, of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, said he and other activists spoke to family members and witnesses who "sharply disputed" the Sheriff's Department's version of the events, saying Player did not have a gun, did not threaten officers and was shot while running away with no warning given. (KTLA)

We will have to wait and see what the OIR and the DA decide after they are finished with their investigations before making a final decision on was this or was this not the improper use of deadly force.I may have written too soon!

On a personal opinion note: If it is found that Player did in fact point a cell phone at the Police while running, giving an illusion that he was carrying a hand gun and pointing it at them, then I will retract my statement that it believe this was in fact misuse of deadly force. If the officers felt their lives were in danger they had a right to fire on him. Him if pointed a what they thought was a gun at them and turned as they shot at him, then so be it. He was still threatening their lives while repeatedly turning and acting like he was going to fire at them at any time. I will gladly eat my words if we find this to be true!

you don't know anything unless you are there and directly involved. do not believe everything the media prints because most of it is only versions or bits and pieces of what actually happened.

8 bulletts in the back say's a lot for itself. There were also credible witnesses. We will both see what the outside investigation decides on the matter. I will kepp an open mind if you will!

I am crying. I love God and I am ready to go anytime. The law says that public employees have a legal duty to protect their citizens. When they are negligent in their duty, people get shot. The real problem is guns. How did we exist before they were invented?

There is no such thing as contributory negligence for an intentional tort.

I am hurt when people get hurt.
