Running While Sick... Is it a good idea?

Should you run when you are sick with the common cold? What if I have a fever?

These are good questions to ask and good questions to find the answer too. Well I am going to help you find the answer to them today. (at least tell you what I have found and think. I am by no means a doctor, so these suggestions are not medical advice.)

When you run you improve circulation in your body which in turn releases the stress throughout your body. This is one reason why running can calm you down if you are angry or frustrated about something, but that is an HUB for another time. Reducing stress and improving circulation in your body helps to boost your immune system. A stronger immune system is what fights off a sickness in your body, so strengthening your immune system helps fight off the sickness.

You have to remember that when your body is sick it is using extra energy and fluids to fight of the infection. Therefore you need to closely monitor your energy levels and make sure you are drinking loads of water. This is vitally important because if you simply go running you could potentially take away the precious energy your body needs to fight the sickness. So although running can boost your immune system, you need to help fuel that stronger immune system with lots of water and a very healthy diet.

It is important to closely monitor your sickness and energy if you run while you are sick. If you have a fever or develop a fever it is always best to stay inside. Your body is using too much energy fighting the fever, it becomes too week to run and use up that precious energy. At this point stay inside, eat healthy and most importantly rest. If you do not have a fever but start to feel week, then it may not be best to run. Again, taking it easy and resting would probably be the best.

But... If you run while you are sick you may find that you just flush that sickness out by boosting your immune system and washing it out with loads of water.

The most important thing is to monitor you situation closely when you are sick, and if in question always consult your doctor. Also note that this article is about running with a common cold. If you have any other sickness you should consult your doctor before running.

I agree - if you have a temperature, drink lots of water, and go to bed (-:
