Should We Get More Involved?
69I was reading an article today about a 83 year old man, from Southeast New York. It seems he and his daughter were on their way to a wedding, when a driver in a pickup truck rear-ended them causing damage. The driver of the pickup took off and the chase started. No not a high speed chase with the police in pursuit, but a 15 mile some what low speed chase, with the 83 year old and his daughter in pursuit.
With the daughter on her cell phone calling the police and the 83 year old following the pickup driver, they managed to follow the driver to his driveway in Danbury, Conn. some 15 miles from the scene of the accident. And stayed there until police arrived.
When asked why he did it, the 83 year old said, he "feared the guy was going to kill someone". Unfortunately, by the time all the reports were filled out in two states they missed the wedding. But he said he would do it again if he had to.
Police say the pickup driver was charged with DUI, and driving without a license, and leaving the scene of an accident.
So this brings me to my question. "Should we get more involved"? Should we join our neighborhood watch programs? Yes! If we see a crime in progress should we call the police? Yes! If you see a person that is in need of help, do you help? Yes!
With the way the world is today people out of work, people on drugs, stalkers stalking our children, senior citizens being mugged, yes we do need to be more involved and aware of our surroundings. Desperate people do desperate things. More so now than ever before.
With all the technology we have at out finger tips, there is no reason not to get involved. The cell phone takes a bad rap allot of times, but it sure in handy in a emergency situation isn't it?
Now I'm not saying put yourself or anyone else in a life threatening position. But think about this, the next time you have your head down texting, maybe while your driving...(Big No No!) or your sitting in your favorite fast food restaurant, or coffee shop. Remember to look up once in awhile you just might be witnessing a crime where you could make a difference. Or you could on the other hand, miss a little old lady being mugged, and missing the opportunity to help!
I hope you remember this story about the 83 year old who got involved....remember you're never too old!

Hear hear - the more we turn a blind eye, the more people will commit crimes knowing they'll get away with it!!!

Hi Maita my friend, thanks as always for stopping by. Have a good one. K
Nice! I wouldn't be surprised if that guy was also on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day! That generation helped out no matter the consequences; we could all learn a thing or two from him and others like him. Great hub!
Hey Denn thanks for the comment. You're right he probably was at D-Day! One tough customer. Thanks K.
